Sukuna Pumpkin

A Rare Local Specialty Shaped by the Climate and Waters of Nyukawa

Sukuna pumpkin is a distinctive local vegetable grown in Nyukawa Town, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, formerly part of Ono District. This traditional variety is prized for its unusual shape, natural sweetness, and rarity, reflecting the unique growing conditions of the Hida region.

The pumpkin takes its name from Ryōmen Sukuna, a legendary figure associated with Hida who is said to have lived around 1,600 years ago. According to local tradition, he was a regional leader born in Nyukawa who helped develop the land, nurtured Hida’s renowned woodworking tradition, and devoted himself to protecting the local people.

Impressive Size and Distinctive Shape

Sukuna pumpkins are harvested from August through October. At maturity, they typically grow to approximately 50 centimeters in length and weigh around 2.5 kilograms. Their elongated shape makes them quite different from the round pumpkins commonly found in supermarkets.

Unlike many modern agricultural varieties, Sukuna pumpkin has not undergone conventional variety improvement. Because it retains its traditional characteristics, growers take particular care during cultivation. This careful approach contributes to its status as a rare regional specialty.

Rich Sweetness and a Delicate Texture

Sukuna pumpkin contains more sucrose than many other pumpkin varieties. Its relatively thin cell walls contribute to a soft, fluffy texture when cooked, along with a pleasantly rich natural sweetness.

These qualities also make it well suited to food processing. Its flavor and texture can be enjoyed in a variety of dishes, allowing visitors to experience a distinctive taste of the Hida region’s agricultural heritage.

Best Season: August to October

Sukuna pumpkin is in season from August through October. During this period, visitors to Takayama and the surrounding Hida area can look for this sought-after local vegetable at markets, roadside stations, and restaurants featuring regional ingredients.

For travelers interested in Japanese seasonal produce, Sukuna pumpkin offers a chance to discover a traditional vegetable whose distinctive qualities are closely connected to the natural environment of Gifu Prefecture.
