Sakurayama Nikko Museum

Exquisite Miniature Architecture Crafted by Hida Artisans

Sakurayama Nikko Museum is an annex to the Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall, dedicated to preserving and displaying an extraordinarily detailed scale model of Nikko Toshogu Shrine. During the Taisho period (1912–1926), 33 skilled craftsmen, led by Kichijuro Hasegawa, spent 15 years creating the model at one-tenth the size of the original shrine.

The museum combines a modern interior with a solemn, majestic atmosphere that evokes the grandeur of Nikko Toshogu. Visitors can admire the remarkable craftsmanship and intricate architectural details that reflect the exceptional skills of traditional Hida artisans.

The Miniature Model of Nikko Toshogu Shrine

The miniature model was created during the Taisho period by 33 craftsmen, including Kichijuro Hasegawa. Taking 15 years to complete, it faithfully reproduces Nikko Toshogu Shrine at one-tenth of its actual size.

The model meticulously recreates 28 buildings, including the famous Yomeimon Gate, the main sanctuary, the worship hall, and a five-story pagoda, along with torii gates and other architectural features. Approximately 500,000 individual components were used in its construction, demonstrating an extraordinary level of precision and attention to detail.

After World War II, this exceptionally detailed model was taken to the United States, where it toured the country and was exhibited for many years. It eventually returned to Japan, where visitors can once again appreciate the remarkable craftsmanship of the Hida artisans who created it.

About Nikko Toshogu Shrine

Nikko Toshogu Shrine is located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. It enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, who was deified as Tōshō Daigongen. The shrine is regarded as the principal center of Toshogu worship in Japan and is renowned for its richly decorated architecture and historical significance.

Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall

The adjoining Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall is a rare facility where visitors can view authentic festival floats used in traditional celebrations. The lavishly decorated floats, designated Important Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan, are used in the Autumn Takayama Festival and can be admired at close range throughout the year.

Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine

Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine is traditionally believed to have originated when Takefurukuma-no-Mikoto entered Hida Province under an imperial order to subdue Ryomen Sukuna, a legendary enemy. Before the campaign, he is said to have enshrined Emperor Ojin in the sacred area of Mount Sakurayama to pray for victory.

The shrine grounds also contain several auxiliary shrines, each associated with particular blessings:

Visitors can explore the peaceful shrine grounds and pay their respects at these smaller shrines. Both the Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall and Sakurayama Nikko Museum are located within the grounds of Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine.
