The Shinhotaka Ropeway offers an unforgettable aerial journey to an elevation of approximately 2,200 meters above sea level. It is home to Japan’s only double-decker gondola ropeway, allowing visitors to enjoy a unique ride high above the mountains and experience breathtaking panoramic views.
The ropeway runs along the Sengoku Ridge in the Northern Japan Alps, within Chūbu-Sangaku National Park. Located in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, it also serves as part of an access route to Mount Nishihotaka.
At Nishihotakaguchi Station, the ropeway’s upper terminal, an observation deck offers magnificent 360-degree views of the Northern Japan Alps. Impressive peaks stretch across the horizon, including Mount Kasa, Mount Yari, Mount Nishihotaka, and Mount Yake.
This remarkable viewpoint has received a two-star rating in the Michelin Green Guide Japan, recognizing its outstanding scenic appeal.
The Shinhotaka Ropeway provides opportunities to enjoy the changing mountain landscape throughout the year. From May through October, wildflowers and alpine plants bloom across the mountainsides.
Autumn is especially popular for its brilliant foliage, which can usually be enjoyed from early to late October. Around October 20, the landscape may feature a striking combination of colorful autumn leaves and freshly fallen snow on the mountain peaks.
In winter, enormous walls of snow form around the observation deck. Visitors can stroll along passages bordered by snow walls reaching approximately three meters high, immersing themselves in a spectacular white landscape.
From mid-October to early November, operating hours are extended to allow visitors to enjoy the mountains bathed in the warm colors of the setting sun.
Available during selected periods, the stargazing service offers an opportunity to admire countless sparkling stars from an elevation of approximately 2,156 meters. Far from the bright lights of cities, the mountain setting provides a memorable backdrop for observing the night sky.
Surrounded by pristine forest at an elevation of more than 2,000 meters, the Forest Terrace is a peaceful place to relax and appreciate the mountain environment.
Located at Shirakabadaira Station on the second ropeway, Alps Bakery is a popular spot for freshly baked goods. A view lounge is also available, allowing visitors to enjoy their purchases while taking in the surrounding scenery.
