Shinhotaka-no-Yu is a popular day-use hot spring in the Shinhotaka Onsen area of the Oku-Hida Hot Spring Villages. Located beside the Gamata River, this open-air bath offers a wonderful opportunity to relax in natural hot spring water while admiring the surrounding mountains. Visitors can enjoy lush greenery in summer and brilliant autumn foliage in fall.
The bath is mixed-gender, but swimwear is permitted, making it possible for visitors of different ages and genders to enjoy the experience together.
The bath is so open and spacious that it can even be viewed from a nearby bridge. Its relaxed atmosphere and spectacular natural setting make it a distinctive attraction in the Oku-Hida region.
While soaking in the hot spring water, visitors can admire the changing scenery throughout the seasons and listen to the gentle sounds of the Gamata River flowing nearby. The combination of warm water, fresh mountain air, and beautiful surroundings makes bathing here a memorable experience.
In autumn, the surrounding landscape is transformed by vivid shades of red and yellow. During seasonal events, the area around Shinhotaka-no-Yu is illuminated, allowing visitors to enjoy the outdoor bath after dark while taking in the colorful scenery.
Shinhotaka Onsen is part of the Oku-Hida Hot Spring Villages in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, in the historic region of Hida. Although the exact date when the hot springs were first discovered is unknown, local tradition holds that retainers of the warlord Takeda Shingen visited the springs during the Sengoku period. This suggests that the hot springs may have been known even earlier.
The mineral composition varies across the Shinhotaka Onsen area.
The hot spring area extends across a broad region and is divided into three districts: Shinhotaka, Gamata, and Nakao.
The Shinhotaka district is the oldest of the three and is home to a station for the Shinhotaka Ropeway. It also serves as an important base for hikers and climbers exploring the Hotaka Mountain Range in the Northern Japanese Alps.
In addition to the outdoor bath at Shinhotaka-no-Yu, where visitors can bathe by making a small contribution, a drinking-water spring is available near the bus terminal close to the ropeway.
Water from the Gamata River can flow into the bath, lowering the water temperature and creating a pleasantly lukewarm bathing experience. Gravel covers the bottom of the bath, providing a distinctive natural texture underfoot.
Shinhotaka-no-Yu is the only mixed-gender outdoor bathing facility among the day-use hot springs in the Shinhotaka Onsen area. Separate changing rooms are provided for men and women, and swimwear is allowed, making the experience more comfortable for visitors.
Because the bath is situated beside a river, rising water levels occasionally carry sediment into the bathing area. Local residents regularly carry out repairs and cleaning to maintain the facility and preserve this special hot spring for visitors.
Shinhotaka-no-Yu closes during the winter and early spring, generally from October 31 until late April. Its riverside setting, seasonal scenery, and relaxed bathing atmosphere make it a distinctive place to experience the natural beauty of the Oku-Hida region.
