Hirayu Great Falls is a spectacular waterfall measuring approximately 64 meters in height and 6 meters in width. It is considered one of the three great waterfalls of the Hida region and has been selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls and one of Gifu Prefecture’s 50 Famous Waters.
The waterfall offers beautiful scenery throughout the year. In early May, powerful streams of snowmelt cascade down the cliff. By late May, fresh green foliage adds color to the surrounding landscape. From early October, the leaves of Japanese maples, beech trees, and white birches turn brilliant shades of autumn color.
During the harsh winter cold, Hirayu Great Falls freezes, transforming into enormous columns of ice. Every February, the Hirayu Great Falls Ice Festival celebrates this remarkable natural phenomenon. The illuminated ice formations create a magical nighttime spectacle that attracts many visitors.
The festival is held annually from February 15 to 25. In addition to the illuminated frozen waterfall, visitors can enjoy events such as fireworks, making this a memorable winter attraction in the Oku-Hida region.
Hirayu Great Falls is formed along the Hirayu River, where a substantial volume of water plunges 64 meters down a steep cliff. Surrounded by the magnificent Hida Mountains, the waterfall is designated as a scenic site by Gifu Prefecture.
The combination of the powerful cascade, rugged mountain scenery, and abundant natural surroundings makes it one of the area’s most impressive sights. Each season brings a different atmosphere, from the freshness of spring and summer to brilliant autumn foliage and the dramatic frozen landscape of winter.
The waterfall is also associated with a local legend from the Sengoku period. According to tradition, a retainer of the warlord Takeda Shingen discovered a hot spring in this area. The spring later became known as Hirayu Onsen, one of the best-known hot spring destinations in Oku-Hida.
Hirayu Great Falls is approximately a 25-minute walk south of Hirayu Onsen, making it a convenient destination for visitors staying at the area’s hot spring inns.
The surrounding area has been developed as Oku-Hida Hirayu Great Falls Park, offering facilities that make a visit more enjoyable. These include a paid parking area, footbaths, and a center where visitors can experience making soba noodles.
From the park, the waterfall can be reached on foot in approximately 12 minutes. A free shuttle bus is also available, providing an alternative for visitors who prefer not to walk the entire route.
Hirayu Great Falls is a captivating destination where visitors can experience the power of nature and the changing beauty of the seasons. Whether admiring the rushing snowmelt in spring, enjoying the cool mountain atmosphere in summer, viewing the autumn leaves, or marveling at the illuminated ice formations in winter, the waterfall offers a memorable experience in the heart of the Hida Mountains.
