Hokkaido Tarabagani – King Crab

The King of Hokkaido Crabs

Tarabagani, or king crab, is one of the most impressive seafood specialties of Hokkaido. Known for its enormous size, firm texture and rich flavor, it is often described as the “king of crabs” and is one of the great tastes of northern Japan, alongside Hokkaido’s famous Kegani horsehair crab.

A Giant Crab Related to Hermit Crabs

Despite its appearance, Tarabagani is actually a member of the hermit crab family. Its Japanese name is written as “鱈場蟹,” which is commonly interpreted as meaning a crab found where cod are caught or during the season when cod are abundant.

Tarabagani inhabit waters around Hokkaido at depths of approximately 30 to 360 meters. During the spawning season, they move toward shallower coastal waters.

A Striking Appearance

The shell of Tarabagani is covered with numerous prominent spines, giving the crab a powerful and rugged appearance. When young, the upper surface of its body is purplish, while the underside and claws have a reddish-orange color.

When cooked, the entire crab turns a brilliant scarlet red, creating the dramatic appearance commonly associated with king crab served at Japanese seafood restaurants.

Large, Meaty and Full of Flavor

Tarabagani is prized for its impressive size as well as the satisfying texture of its meat. The legs contain thick portions of crab meat with a firm, juicy bite, making the crab especially enjoyable for those who want to experience the substantial flavor of Hokkaido seafood.

Best Enjoyed Simply Boiled

To fully appreciate its natural flavor and distinctive texture, salt-boiled Tarabagani is highly recommended. Simple preparation allows the sweetness of the crab meat to shine without masking its rich taste.

Tarabagani is also delicious prepared in other ways, including tempura. Whether enjoyed at a seafood restaurant or served as part of a Hokkaido crab feast, it is a memorable choice for travelers seeking one of northern Japan’s most iconic delicacies.
