Kusataro is a traditional Japanese steamed bun flavored with yomogi, or Japanese mugwort, a plant that has long been valued in Japan for its medicinal properties. Its vivid green color and distinctive herbal aroma are the result of carefully selected ingredients, freshness, and meticulous preparation.
The buns are made with hand-picked wild mugwort shoots gathered around Lake Toya and wheat produced in Hokkaido. The dough has a soft, delicate texture reminiscent of Japanese washi paper, while its pleasantly chewy bite and naturally vibrant green color showcase the distinctive character of fresh mugwort. No artificial coloring is used.
The rich mugwort flavor pairs beautifully with the homemade chunky red bean paste, prepared using azuki beans from Tokachi in Hokkaido. The balance between the fragrant dough and the gently sweet filling is one of Kusataro’s defining qualities.
Developing this distinctive confection took 26 years of research, beginning shortly after the company was founded in 1950. The result is a Hokkaido specialty celebrated for its natural color, satisfying texture, and full-bodied mugwort aroma.
From 1992 to 1997, Kusataro was served as an in-flight confection on Japan Airlines (JAL), helping the sweet gain nationwide recognition. In 2007, it was also selected as a special confection presented to Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan at the 58th National Tree-Planting Festival.
With its brilliant green hue derived entirely from natural mugwort, Kusataro offers a taste of Hokkaido’s natural bounty and makes a memorable treat for visitors exploring the region.
