Asahi Melon is a premium melon grown in the former Oiwake Town area of Hokkaido, near Yūbari. Sometimes described as rivaling the famous Yūbari melon, it is known for its exceptionally high quality, refreshing sweetness, and firm flesh.
Asahi Melon is graded in the highest quality category, known as “Shūhin”. Its average sugar content is 15° Brix or higher, giving it a rich sweetness while maintaining a clean and refreshing finish.
Unlike melons whose intense sweetness can become heavy after a few bites, Asahi Melon is characterized by a smooth, refreshing sweetness that does not become tiring to eat. Its flesh also holds its shape well rather than easily breaking apart.
Another appealing feature of Asahi Melon is that its flavorful flesh extends close to the skin. This allows you to enjoy more of the melon’s naturally sweet flesh rather than leaving a thick layer uneaten.
Its combination of sweetness, freshness, and firm texture has helped Asahi Melon gain increasing popularity as a premium Hokkaido melon.
The production area is located next to Yūbari City, an area famous throughout Japan for its melons. The region experiences significant differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures, creating excellent conditions for melon cultivation.
The warm sunshine during the day and cooler temperatures at night help the fruit develop its characteristic flavor and sweetness. This natural environment, combined with careful cultivation, supports the high quality of Asahi Melon.
The Asahi Melon R113 (Red 113) variety is harvested from around mid-August through the end of October. Its relatively long harvest period is another advantage, allowing melon lovers to enjoy this Hokkaido specialty well into autumn.
