Lake Utonai is a freshwater lake surrounded by expansive wetlands and natural wilderness in Tomakomai, Hokkaido. Located about 11 kilometers east-northeast of central Tomakomai, the lake stretches across the alluvial plain of the lower Bibi River. It has a circumference of approximately 9 kilometers, an area of about 275 hectares, and an average depth of only 1.2 meters.
The surrounding landscape of wetlands, grasslands, and natural vegetation supports an exceptionally rich variety of wildlife. More than 260 species of birds have been recorded around the lake, making it one of Hokkaido’s rewarding destinations for birdwatching and nature observation.
Lake Utonai serves as an important stopover and wintering site for migratory birds. In spring and autumn, large flocks of geese, ducks, and swans arrive at the lake during their seasonal migrations.
Because birds can be observed throughout the year, the lake is an appealing destination for both experienced birdwatchers and first-time visitors. Depending on the season, visitors may see large numbers of swans and other wild birds gathering close to the shoreline.
Two facilities provide opportunities to learn more about the natural environment. The Lake Utonai Wildlife Conservation Center serves a visitor-center role, while the Nature Center operated by the Wild Bird Society of Japan is located on the northwestern side of the lake as part of a bird sanctuary.
Nature observation trails allow visitors to explore the surroundings at a leisurely pace. Walking along these paths offers a chance to experience the wetlands, forests, and lakeside environment while keeping an eye out for birds and other wildlife.
Lake Utonai and its surrounding area are designated as a National Wildlife Protection Area Special Protection Zone, reflecting the importance of the habitat for wild animals and birds. In 1991, the lake was also designated as a Ramsar Site, recognizing its international importance as a wetland.
This protected environment provides valuable habitat for migratory birds and a wide range of other plants and animals. For visitors, it offers the opportunity to observe Hokkaido’s natural ecosystems in a relatively accessible setting.
Roadside Station Lake Utonai provides a convenient place to take a break while exploring the area. The facility offers an open view of the lake, along with ice cream, bird-themed souvenirs, and other items for visitors.
The takeout area also serves local specialties and family-friendly treats, including steamed buns filled with the region’s popular “B1 Ton-chan” meat and haskap-flavored soft-serve ice cream. Bird-themed goods make distinctive souvenirs for visitors who want to remember their time at the lake.
One of Lake Utonai’s greatest advantages for travelers is its convenient location. The lake is only a little over 10 kilometers from New Chitose Airport, approximately a 10-minute drive. This makes it possible to visit the wetlands before or after a flight and enjoy a peaceful natural setting without traveling far from the airport.
Families can also enjoy an easy walk around the lake while looking for wild birds together. The combination of accessible nature trails, abundant birdlife, wetlands, and seasonal scenery makes Lake Utonai a refreshing stop for travelers exploring southern Hokkaido.
Lake Utonai is a tranquil wetland sanctuary where migratory birds, forests, and water come together. From spring and autumn migration seasons to the quiet landscapes of winter and summer, each season offers a different perspective on the lake’s natural environment.
Whether you are a dedicated birdwatcher, a family looking for a gentle nature walk, or a traveler with time before a flight from New Chitose Airport, Lake Utonai offers an inviting glimpse of Hokkaido’s rich wildlife and wetland ecosystems.
