Shirahige Falls is a spectacular waterfall in the Shirogane area of Biei, Hokkaido. Approximately 40 meters wide and 30 meters high, the waterfall consists of dozens of slender streams that emerge from the rock and plunge energetically into the Biei River below.
Unlike an ordinary waterfall fed by an open river or stream, Shirahige Falls is formed by groundwater seeping through cracks in layers of lava. This unusual geological formation classifies it as a subterranean waterfall, making it a particularly distinctive natural feature.
The water flowing from Shirahige Falls contains volcanic minerals that give the Biei River its remarkable cobalt-blue color. The contrast between the white streams of the waterfall, dark volcanic rocks, and vividly colored river creates an unforgettable landscape.
The best overall view can be enjoyed from Blue River Bridge, which crosses the Biei River near the falls. From the bridge, visitors can look directly down toward the waterfall and see the numerous streams emerging from the rock face.
Shirahige Falls changes character throughout the year. In autumn, the vivid colors of the surrounding foliage combine with the deep blue of the river, creating a striking seasonal contrast.
Winter brings an especially atmospheric scene. White snow and frozen-looking waterfall streams stand out against the darker rock, while spray and rising vapor from the water can create rime ice on nearby trees. The resulting landscape has an almost fantastical appearance.
Shirahige Falls is located beside Shirogane Onsen, a popular hot spring area surrounded by the natural scenery of the Biei mountains. Hotels and other accommodations are located close to the waterfall, making it an easy sightseeing stop during a stay in the area.
The Shirogane Tourist Information Center is also nearby. Visitors can use its parking area and restrooms when exploring the waterfall and surrounding attractions.
