Toyooka City Izushi Historical Museum

Discover the History and Culture of Izushi

Toyooka City Izushi Historical Museum is a history museum located in Izushi, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture. The museum introduces the area’s rich historical and cultural heritage through a collection of valuable documents, artifacts, and other historical materials. Housed in a former merchant family’s residence, it offers visitors an opportunity to explore the history of the Izushi domain and the development of the town from the Edo period to modern times.

Museum Overview and Historical Collection

In 1977, the former residence of the Fukutomi family, a prosperous local merchant family, was acquired by the former town of Izushi and opened to the public as a historical museum. Its collection includes records related to the Sengoku Disturbance, documents concerning the administration of the Izushi domain, old maps, weapons and armor, and artifacts excavated from Chausuyama Kofun, an ancient burial mound.

The museum provides insight into the political affairs, everyday life, and cultural traditions of the region. Its historical atmosphere has also attracted the attention of filmmakers. In 1997, the building was used as a filming location for the popular Hong Kong television drama Sam Sai Mang, adding another chapter to its story.

Architectural Features

The museum occupies the main residence of the wealthy Fukutomi family, which was rebuilt shortly after the Great Izushi Fire of 1876. The Fukutomi family operated a raw silk business. After the fire destroyed much of the town, the family invited skilled craftsmen from Kyoto to construct an elegant residence combining traditional Japanese design with the refined sukiya style associated with tea houses and tea ceremony culture.

Stone was used for the building’s foundation, and the construction was considered exceptionally expensive for its time, with the cost reportedly comparable to that of an entire house. The residence was selected for Hyogo Prefecture’s list of 100 Outstanding Houses in 1987 and has also been designated a cultural property by Toyooka City.

Buildings and Exhibitions

The museum consists of three buildings: the main residence, an annex, and a traditional storehouse. Historical materials related to the Izushi domain are displayed throughout the complex, allowing visitors to learn about life and culture during the Edo period.

The second floor of the main residence is particularly noteworthy for its intricate interior layout, which offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of a prosperous merchant family. The architecture itself is an important part of the museum experience, revealing the craftsmanship and social standing reflected in a wealthy household of the Meiji era.

Visitor Information

The museum is generally open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with last admission at 4:30 p.m. It is closed on Tuesdays, or the following day when Tuesday falls on a public holiday, as well as during the year-end and New Year period from December 28 through January 4.
