Hattan Waterfall is a beautiful waterfall in the Kannabe Highlands of Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, within the San’in Kaigan UNESCO Global Geopark. Its name is said to come from the waterfall’s height, which was traditionally compared to eight tan, a unit of cloth length. To distinguish it from other waterfalls with the same name, it is also known as Nashiki Hattan Falls or Hidaka Hattan Falls.
Hattan Waterfall lies in a gorge shaped by lava that flowed from Mount Kannabe approximately 10,000 years ago. The waterfall plunges approximately 24 meters in a single drop into a large pool filled with striking blue-green water. Its abundant flow continues throughout the year, reaching its peak in mid-to-late May when snowmelt swells the stream.
Spring brings the year’s strongest flow as melting snow feeds the waterfall. The powerful cascade, framed by fresh green leaves, creates an impressive natural spectacle.
In summer, lush trees surround the waterfall, creating a cool and peaceful retreat. The refreshing spray and chilly water offer welcome relief from the heat, making the area an inviting place to enjoy the natural surroundings.
In autumn, the trees around the waterfall turn brilliant shades of red and yellow. The contrast between the colorful foliage and the flowing water creates a beautiful landscape with a quiet, almost dreamlike atmosphere.
Winter transforms the surrounding landscape into a world of white. On particularly cold days, parts of the waterfall may freeze, creating a mysterious scene reminiscent of a curtain of ice against the snowy backdrop.
Visitors can view Hattan Waterfall from an observation point overlooking the cascade. A walking trail also leads closer to the waterfall, allowing visitors to approach the front of the plunge pool and experience the power of the falling water at closer range.
