Kasumi Coast

A Scenic Coastline of Blue Seas and Dramatic Rock Formations

Kasumi Coast, located in Kami Town in northern Hyogo Prefecture, is a spectacular rocky coastline within San’in Kaigan National Park. Designated a Place of Scenic Beauty by the Japanese government, it is renowned for its rugged cliffs, unusual rock formations, sea caves, and beautiful blue waters. Shaped over millions of years by volcanic activity and the relentless action of the waves, the coastline offers some of the most striking scenery along the Sea of Japan.

Exploring the Coastline

The Eastern Coast

The eastern section of Kasumi Coast features several islands and peninsulas, including Shiroyama Peninsula, Kuroshima Island, and Shiraishijima Island. The shoreline is marked by numerous wave-eroded cliffs, sea caves, and unusual rock formations.

One of the area’s most famous landmarks is Yoroi no Sode, or “Armor Sleeve,” a dramatic sea cliff designated a Natural Monument of Japan. Its distinctive appearance makes it one of the defining features of the eastern coastline.

The Western Coast

The western section includes Kasumihama Beach, Matsugasaki, Hachinosushima Island, Takanosushima Island, and Tajima Matsushima, a scenic area named for its resemblance to the famous Matsushima islands in northeastern Japan.

The coastline displays a complex mixture of volcanic rocks and sedimentary formations dating from the Neogene Period. Because different rock types erode at different rates, the waves have carved an intricate landscape of steep cliffs, rocky headlands, and irregular coastal formations.

Geology and Natural Formation

The geological foundations of Kasumi Coast include the Hokutan and Teragi Groups, rock formations dating from the Neogene Period that were shaped by volcanic activity and movements of the Earth’s crust. Over millions of years, waves gradually wore away the rock, creating the rugged cliffs and distinctive formations visible today.

Although the wider San’in Kaigan region is known for its wave-cut cliffs, Kasumi Coast stands out for the remarkable variety and complexity of its scenery. Columnar and sheet-like rock joints, sea caves, and isolated rock pillars reveal the powerful natural processes that have shaped the coastline.

Historical Recognition

Kasumi Coast was designated a Place of Scenic Beauty by the Japanese government in May 1938. This recognition reflects the exceptional beauty and geological significance of its coastal landscape.

Boat Tours and Coastal Sightseeing

Excursion boats once operated from Kasumi Port, offering visitors views of the coastline from the sea. The original service ended on November 30, 2016. In May 2019, a new sightseeing service called Kasumi Sea GEO TAXI began operating on an irregular schedule using small fishing boats rather than conventional passenger vessels.

Exploring the coast from the water offers a different perspective on its towering cliffs, hidden caves, and offshore rock formations. Because the service operates irregularly, visitors should check current availability before planning a boat trip.

Major Scenic Attractions

Kasumi Port Area

The area around Kasumi Port offers access to coastal scenery and outdoor activities. Nearby attractions include Kogane-matsu, or Golden Pine, and Oshima Island. The surrounding waters are popular for swimming and fishing, making this a pleasant area to enjoy the seaside.

Obiki-no-Hana Cape

Located at the eastern end of Kasumi Bay, Obiki-no-Hana is a dramatic headland formed by the collapse of andesite rock along a fault. An observation platform near the tip provides sweeping views of the bay and its rugged shoreline.

One of the most striking features is the reddish-brown cliff known as Tajima Sekiheki, or the Red Wall of Tajima. Its imposing appearance inspired a name associated with the famous battlefield of Chinese history and the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Yoroi no Sode: The Armor Sleeve Cliff

Yoroi no Sode is one of the most impressive natural landmarks on Kasumi Coast. This immense sea cliff rises approximately 65 meters and extends about 200 meters along the shore, with a steep slope of around 70 degrees.

The formation developed through volcanic activity between approximately 10 million and 3 million years ago. Its rhyolitic dacite and tuff display striking columnar and sheet-like joints. These patterns resemble the layered plates of a samurai’s armor, giving the cliff its evocative name, “Armor Sleeve.”

Sea Caves and Offshore Rock Formations

The waters around Yoroi no Sode contain numerous unusual rock formations and sea caves. Highlights include Kujaku Domon, a natural sea passage, and Takanosushima Island, also known as Indian Island. These dramatic formations demonstrate the extraordinary variety of landscapes created by the interaction of volcanic rock and the sea.

Asahi Domon Sea Cave

Asahi Domon is a sea cave formed in volcanic rock near the boundary between Shinonsen Town and Kami Town. Located in San’in Kaigan National Park, it passes through the central part of Nokogiri Cape, a headland approximately 600 meters long.

For about one week around May 20 each year, the rising sun can be seen through the cave opening, creating a memorable natural spectacle. This seasonal sunrise view inspired the name Asahi Domon, meaning “Morning Sun Gate.” The precise viewing conditions depend on the weather and the position of the sun.

What Makes Kasumi Coast Special

Kasumi Coast offers more than beautiful ocean views. It is also an excellent destination for anyone interested in geology and the natural history of Japan. Towering cliffs, distinctive rock joints, sea caves, and isolated offshore formations reveal how volcanic activity and erosion have shaped the landscape over geological time.

The coastline is also known for its beautiful sunsets and the lights of fishing boats glowing offshore after dark. Its appearance changes with the seasons, offering different colors, light, and atmosphere throughout the year.

Driving along the coastal roads is one of the best ways to appreciate the scenery, with opportunities to stop at viewpoints and explore individual landmarks. Allow plenty of time to enjoy the rugged coastline, clear blue sea, and remarkable rock formations that make Kasumi Coast one of the outstanding scenic destinations along the Sea of Japan.
