Ritsuunkyo Gorge is a scenic mountain valley located in Wadayama Town, Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture. The area is famous for its ethereal landscapes, where river mist and vast blankets of clouds transform the surrounding mountains into a dreamlike scene. Its name is associated with these beautiful misty views, particularly the sea of clouds that sometimes forms over the Maruyama River valley.
The gorge is especially popular for its spectacular views of Takeda Castle Ruins, often called the “Castle in the Sky.” From the viewpoints at Ritsuunkyo, visitors can look across the valley toward the ancient fortress perched high on a mountain, creating one of Hyogo Prefecture’s most iconic landscapes.
From Ritsuunkyo’s observation points, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Takeda Castle Ruins, located on the summit of Nishikojo Mountain at an elevation of approximately 353 meters. On suitable mornings, especially from autumn through winter, a sea of clouds may gather around the mountain and envelop the ruins, making the castle appear to float above the clouds.
This extraordinary spectacle has earned Takeda Castle the nickname “Japan’s Machu Picchu.” The combination of historic stone walls, mountain ridges, and swirling clouds creates an unforgettable view that attracts photographers and travelers from across Japan and abroad.
Ritsuunkyo Terrace offers another excellent vantage point. In addition to the castle ruins, visitors can see the Maruyama River winding through the valley below and the historic town of Takeda nestled among the mountains. The broad panorama reveals the close relationship between the castle, the surrounding landscape, and the settlement it once protected.
Ritsuunkyo lies on the middle slopes of Mount Asago, which rises to approximately 756.4 meters. The area is a beautiful natural gorge dotted with unusual rock formations, massive boulders, and waterfalls.
Notable features include Oonaru Pond and Ryujin Falls, both of which add to the area’s peaceful atmosphere. Walking through the gorge offers opportunities to appreciate the rugged terrain, forest scenery, and seasonal changes in the mountain environment.
Ritsuunkyo is also celebrated as one of the San’in region’s outstanding cherry blossom destinations. Sometimes called “Tajima Yoshino” in recognition of its spectacular mountain cherry trees, the gorge attracts many visitors when the blossoms open in spring.
During the flowering season, the slopes are covered with delicate pink and white blossoms, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding greenery and rocky landscape. The annual Ritsuunkyo Cherry Blossom Festival adds to the festive atmosphere, making spring another rewarding time to visit.
There are four observation points at Ritsuunkyo, each offering a different perspective on Takeda Castle Ruins and the surrounding mountains. Visitors can choose their preferred viewpoint or explore several to enjoy the changing angles and scenery.
Ritsuunkyo Terrace, completed in September 2021, is a particularly popular viewing location. Its carefully arranged vantage point brings the castle ruins into clear view across the valley, making it an excellent place to appreciate the landscape and take photographs.
On April 9, 2022, a monument known as the Path of Light Viewing Point was installed at Ritsuunkyo Terrace. This feature celebrates the beauty of light and the natural surroundings, adding a distinctive landmark to the viewing area.
Ritsuunkyo provides basic facilities for visitors exploring the gorge and its viewpoints. The Hyogo Prefectural Minami-Tajima Nature School is located on the eastern slope of the mountain and serves as a venue for nature education.
A parking area and restrooms are available around the clock. Visitors using the parking facilities are asked to contribute an environmental maintenance fee of ¥300 per person for high school students and older.
Because the viewing points are located on a mountainside, visitors should wear comfortable walking shoes and allow sufficient time to explore the paths. Early-morning visits to see the sea of clouds may require walking in darkness or cool conditions, so suitable clothing and a flashlight can be helpful.
From JR Takeda Station on the Bantan Line, Ritsuunkyo can be reached in approximately 45 minutes on foot or about 10 minutes by taxi.
For visitors arriving by car, the gorge is approximately 10 minutes from Wadayama Interchange on the Kitakinki-Toyooka Expressway and Bantan Connecting Road.
The sea of clouds is a natural phenomenon and does not appear every day. Conditions depend on factors such as temperature, humidity, and weather, so visitors hoping to see the castle surrounded by clouds should plan for an early start and remain flexible with their timing.
Several other attractions are located in the surrounding Asago area. Takeda Castle Ruins is the most obvious companion destination, allowing visitors to appreciate the historic fortress itself after viewing it from across the valley.
Other places worth considering include Aokura Shrine, Ikuno Silver Mine, Itoi Gorge, Okuyama Gorge, and Fujitowa Pass. These destinations offer a mix of historical interest and natural scenery, making it easy to build a broader sightseeing itinerary around Ritsuunkyo.
Ritsuunkyo Gorge is one of Hyogo Prefecture’s most memorable scenic destinations, combining dramatic mountain terrain, seasonal cherry blossoms, and sweeping views of Takeda Castle Ruins. When a sea of clouds gathers around the castle, the landscape takes on an almost otherworldly appearance.
Whether visiting for the famous cloud formations, the spring cherry blossoms, or a peaceful walk through the mountains, Ritsuunkyo offers a rewarding experience for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts. Its observation points provide a remarkable perspective on the historic castle and the beautiful landscape of the Tajima region.
