Utsukushigahara Onsen

A Historic Hot Spring Village Where Tradition and Tranquility Endure

Utsukushigahara Onsen is a peaceful hot spring resort on the outskirts of Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, at an elevation of approximately 800 meters. Although it is more than 10 kilometers from the Utsukushigahara Highlands in a straight line, the hot spring area takes its name from this nearby scenic mountain region.

Surrounded by nature and steeped in history, Utsukushigahara Onsen is known for its atmospheric streets, traditional inns, and soothing waters. Its quiet setting makes it an ideal place to experience the slower pace of a traditional Japanese hot spring town.

A History Dating Back More Than a Thousand Years

The history of Utsukushigahara Onsen is said to date back to the early Nara period. The hot springs of the Yamabe area were once known as Tsukama no Nuru-yu, meaning the warm waters of Tsukama, and are mentioned in the Nihon Shoki, one of Japan’s oldest historical chronicles. The record also tells of an imperial villa built at the hot spring.

The famous Heian-period poet Minamoto no Shigeyuki composed a poem about these waters, which was later included in the Goshui Wakashu poetry anthology. These references demonstrate that the reputation of the hot spring was already well established many centuries ago.

During the Edo period, the area became a favored retreat of the Matsumoto Domain. A special hot spring residence known as Yamabe Chaya was established for the domain lord and his retainers, making the area an important destination for therapeutic bathing.

Over the centuries, the hot springs continued to welcome local residents and travelers seeking rest and relief from fatigue, quietly preserving their long tradition as a place of healing.

From Tsukama no Yu to Utsukushigahara Onsen

The hot spring was once known by names such as Shiraito no Yu, Yamabe no Yu, and Tsukama no Yu. In the 1950s, it was renamed Utsukushigahara Onsen after the nearby scenic Utsukushigahara Highlands.

In 1983, Utsukushigahara Onsen was officially designated a National Health and Recreation Hot Spring Resort by the Japanese Environment Agency. The designation recognized both the quality of its spring water and its peaceful surroundings.

Gentle Alkaline Waters Known for Beautiful Skin

Utsukushigahara Onsen is an alkaline simple hot spring. The source temperature is approximately 45°C, with a total discharge of about 1,246 liters per minute.

The water is colorless, clear, and virtually odorless and tasteless, making it gentle and pleasant for bathing. It is traditionally associated with relief from fatigue, muscle pain, neuralgia, and sensitivity to cold.

The water also contains relatively high levels of calcium and sodium ions, giving it a reputation for leaving the skin feeling smooth and moisturized. Among local residents, the spring is affectionately described as being like “lotion for the skin.”

A Traditional Hot Spring Town with Historic Streets

Utsukushigahara Onsen is approximately 20 minutes by car from central Matsumoto. Its streets retain the atmosphere of an old Japanese hot spring town, with wooden buildings, traditional inns, and lattice-fronted architecture.

The historic streetscape has been selected as one of the 100 Scenic Landscapes of Matsumoto City. Around 22 lodging establishments welcome visitors, ranging from traditional Japanese inns to more modern hotels.

The combination of historic architecture, quiet streets, and gentle hot spring waters creates a nostalgic atmosphere. Even today, visitors can enjoy the feeling of stepping away from the pace of modern life and spending time in a peaceful traditional spa town.

Shiraito no Yu: A Local Bathhouse Loved by Residents

Shiraito no Yu is the only public bathhouse in Utsukushigahara Onsen. Located in Satoyamabe, Matsumoto, it is part of the Fureai Yamabe-kan community facility and is popular with both local residents and visitors.

The bath uses a mixture of four different sources, with a source temperature of approximately 42.2°C and a flow rate of about 130 liters per minute.

A strong local bathing tradition has developed around the facility. Some residents line up before 6:00 a.m. in winter to enjoy an early morning bath. The water is appreciated for warming the body thoroughly and helping to relieve fatigue, and some regular visitors come twice a day.

The bathhouse became well known largely through word of mouth rather than advertising. On holidays, it can become busy with visitors, including travelers returning from hiking in the surrounding mountains.

The indoor and outdoor baths are relatively compact, but their intimate scale contributes to their comfortable atmosphere. The facility tends to be particularly busy between approximately 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.. Affordable admission also helps maintain its role as a bathhouse closely connected with everyday local life.

Enjoying the Spring Water as Drinking Water

The waters of Utsukushigahara Onsen are also valued as drinking water. When chilled, the water has a refreshing taste and can be used for making tea and coffee or even cooking rice.

Local people are said to appreciate the water for cooking because it can enhance the flavor of food. It is also traditionally said that rice cooked with the spring water remains unchanged in color even when kept warm until the following day.

It is common for local residents to bring plastic bottles and collect the spring water for use at home. Visitors can also sample drinking spring water at a small park behind Fureai Yamabe-kan.

Fureai Yamabe-kan: A Place for Culture and Community

Fureai Yamabe-kan serves not only as a community facility but also as a place where visitors can learn about the region. The second floor contains meeting and exhibition rooms, where visitors can participate in activities such as soba noodle-making and cooking workshops with advance reservations.

The exhibition room presents information about the history of Utsukushigahara Onsen and its natural environment. The facility provides an opportunity to experience the area’s culture and traditions while interacting with local residents and other visitors.

Convenient Access from Matsumoto

Utsukushigahara Onsen is easily accessible from Matsumoto Station. From the Matsumoto Bus Terminal beside JR Matsumoto Station, visitors can take an Alpico Kotsu bus on the Utsukushigahara Onsen Line and reach the area in approximately 25 minutes.

Local loop buses can also be used, with stops such as Fujii and Tsujido providing convenient access to the hot spring district. Some accommodations also operate shuttle buses from Matsumoto Station, making the area particularly convenient for travelers staying overnight.

A Peaceful Hot Spring Escape in Matsumoto

With a history stretching back more than a thousand years, Utsukushigahara Onsen is one of Matsumoto’s most historic hot spring destinations. Its traditional waters, preserved streets, and quiet atmosphere offer a relaxing contrast to the bustle of modern city life.

A soak in these historic waters provides a chance to slow down and appreciate the atmosphere of old Japan. The traditional streets, the community-loved Shiraito no Yu, and the gentle waters renowned for their skin-friendly qualities come together to create a distinctive hot spring experience.

For travelers exploring Matsumoto and the surrounding mountains, Utsukushigahara Onsen is a peaceful place to experience the region’s natural beauty, history, and enduring bathing culture.
