Norikura Kogen Onsen

Soak in Milky-White Hot Springs Surrounded by the Northern Alps

Norikura Kogen Onsen is a renowned hot spring resort in Azumi, Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, where natural hot spring water from the slopes of Mount Norikura, the southernmost major peak of the Northern Alps, is brought down to the resort area. At an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters, the hot spring village is surrounded by magnificent mountain scenery and offers a relaxing retreat in every season.

The hot spring is particularly famous for its distinctive milky-white water and strong sulfur aroma. The characteristic scent and cloudy appearance create the classic atmosphere many visitors associate with a traditional Japanese hot spring. The water is also known for its warming sensation, leaving the body comfortably warm even after leaving the bath.

The Source and the History of Bringing the Water Down the Mountain

The source of Norikura Kogen Onsen is the Yukawa hot spring source, located halfway up Mount Norikura. The source has been known for centuries, and by around 1934, sulfur-rich hot spring deposits known as yunohana were being collected there. These deposits were an important source of income for the local community and were traditionally harvested twice a year, in spring and summer.

However, bathing directly at the source was dangerous because hydrogen sulfide gas was present in the area, limiting its use. Plans to bring the hot spring water down the mountain were considered from around 1945, but the steep terrain and unusual characteristics of the spring made the project extremely difficult.

Construction finally began in 1974, and after two years of work, the water was successfully brought to Norikura Kogen in 1976. The project overcame a distance of approximately 7 kilometers and an elevation difference of about 550 meters. This achievement laid the foundation for the development of Norikura Kogen as a major hot spring resort.

Milky-White Sulfur Spring Water

Norikura Kogen Onsen has two types of source water, one white and one clear, and both are acidic hydrogen sulfide springs. The source temperature is approximately 50°C, with an abundant flow of around 1,500 liters per minute. The water develops its characteristic milky-white appearance after being drawn from the source.

The spring is classified as a simple sulfur spring (hydrogen sulfide type). Its strong acidity gives the water powerful antibacterial properties. Traditionally, the spring has been used for relaxation and bathing in connection with various ailments, including fatigue, sensitivity to cold, chronic skin conditions, chronic gynecological conditions, diabetes, high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, neuralgia, joint pain, frozen shoulder, bruises, and motor paralysis.

The Norikura Hot Spring Village

Norikura Kogen Onsen extends from the Suzuran area to the Bandokoro area. Hot spring water is supplied to approximately 100 accommodation facilities, including traditional ryokan inns, hotels, and pensions. Together, these facilities are known as the Norikura Onsenkyo hot spring resort area.

The resort’s highland setting allows visitors to combine a relaxing hot spring stay with outdoor activities. At the center of the area is the ski resort Mt. Norikura, which becomes lively with skiers during the winter season. The opportunity to enjoy both hot springs and winter sports is one of Norikura’s distinctive attractions.

Yukemurikan: A Popular Day-Use Hot Spring

One of the symbols of Norikura Kogen Onsen is Yukemurikan, a municipal day-use hot spring facility. Its warm wooden interior houses spacious indoor baths and outdoor baths where visitors can enjoy a relaxing soak in an open setting.

Bathing in the milky-white water while looking toward the mountains of the Northern Alps is an especially memorable experience. The combination of sulfur-scented steam, mountain air, and dramatic scenery creates a deeply relaxing atmosphere.

Another municipal facility, Ginzanso, is also popular with both local residents and visitors. Several pensions in the area offer day-use bathing as well, making it easy to experience the hot spring without staying overnight.

During summer, the free outdoor bath Seseragi-no-Yu is also opened to the public. Surrounded by nature, it offers an especially refreshing way to enjoy the hot spring atmosphere.

A Hot Spring Tradition Rooted in Local History

The hot springs of Norikura Kogen are believed to have been known to people since ancient times. The collection of yunohana around the source was once an important local resource, with income from its collection contributing to the regional economy.

The sulfur-scented waters continued to provide people with a place for bathing, relaxation, and rest over generations. After the successful completion of the water conveyance project, inns and pensions gradually opened throughout the area, transforming Norikura into one of Matsumoto’s best-known mountain hot spring destinations.

From 2005, the resort began to be promoted more widely using the friendlier hiragana spelling “Norikura Onsen”, emphasizing its welcoming character.

Access to Norikura Kogen Onsen

From Shin-Shimashima Station, the terminus of the Alpico Transportation Kamikochi Line, visitors can take an Alpico Transportation bus to Norikura Kogen Onsen. The journey takes approximately 50 minutes.

By car, the resort is approximately one hour from central Matsumoto via National Route 158. Many visitors combine a trip to Norikura Kogen Onsen with nearby destinations such as Kamikochi and Shirahone Onsen, making the area a convenient base for exploring the mountain scenery of Shinshu.

A Mountain Hot Spring for Every Season

Norikura Kogen Onsen brings together the dramatic nature of the Northern Alps and the distinctive character of a sulfur hot spring. The sound of clear mountain streams, forests changing color with the seasons, and gentle steam rising from milky-white water create an atmosphere far removed from everyday life.

Whether visiting amid fresh summer greenery, brilliant autumn foliage, or deep winter snow, a stay in Norikura offers an opportunity to experience both the beauty of the mountains and the long tradition of Japanese hot spring culture.
