Sanbondaki Falls

A Mystical Waterfall Shaped by the Grandeur of Nature

Sanbondaki Falls is a spectacular waterfall located at the uppermost part of Norikura Kogen in the Azumi area of Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture. Designated as a Prefectural Place of Scenic Beauty and selected as one of the 100 Best Waterfalls in Japan, it is one of the region’s most impressive natural attractions.

The name Sanbondaki means “Three Waterfalls.” As the name suggests, three separate streams—the Kōdai-no-gawa River, Kuroi-zawa, and an unnamed stream—come together here, with each waterfall cascading in its own distinctive form. Created by the abundant water and volcanic landscape of Mount Norikura, Sanbondaki is also known as one of the Three Waterfalls of Norikura, together with Zengoro Falls and Bandokoro Falls.

Three Waterfalls, Three Distinctive Expressions

The greatest attraction of Sanbondaki Falls is the chance to see three different waterfalls gathered in a single location. Each has its own character, creating a fascinating contrast within the surrounding forest.

The waterfall on the right flows over Kuroi-zawa, a tributary of the Kōdai-no-gawa River. Its water appears to slide smoothly over dark volcanic rock, creating a striking landscape. The central waterfall is the main cascade of the Kōdai-no-gawa River, where water plunges down with powerful force and an impressive roar. On the left, the unnamed stream forms a quieter waterfall that descends discreetly through the trees, creating a peaceful and secluded atmosphere.

Each waterfall is approximately 50 to 60 meters high, while the waterfall basin lies at an elevation of around 1,840 meters. Surrounded by mountains and forest, the three cascades create a majestic scene that allows visitors to experience the power and tranquility of the highland landscape.

A Sacred Place Connected with Mountain Asceticism

Sanbondaki Falls is also associated with the long history of Norikura mountain worship. It is traditionally said that practitioners of mountain asceticism once used the falls as a place for spiritual purification. Even today, the combination of rushing water, dense forest, and mountain air gives the area a deeply serene atmosphere.

The surrounding forest is rich in evergreen trees such as momi fir and Japanese hemlock. In autumn, the scenery becomes especially beautiful. Deciduous trees including katsura, Japanese birch, and Japanese rowan turn brilliant shades of red and yellow, contrasting with the deep green of the conifers and transforming the waterfall surroundings into a landscape reminiscent of a painting.

Walking Through the Forest to the Falls

Sanbondaki Falls can be reached from the Sanbondaki Bus Stop operated by Alpico Transportation or from the adjacent Sanbondaki Parking Area. From there, the well-maintained Kamoshika-no-komichi Trail takes approximately 25 minutes on foot.

The walk itself is part of the experience. As you follow the forest trail, you can enjoy the cool, clear mountain air and sunlight filtering through the trees. Gradually, the sound of rushing water grows louder until the three waterfalls appear ahead.

There was once another route from the Suzuran area via Suzuran Bridge and a mountain trail. However, this route has been closed since a landslide caused by a typhoon in 2004.

Access Restrictions on the Norikura Echo Line

The Norikura Echo Line, which leads into the highlands of Mount Norikura, is subject to private-car restrictions. During the regulated period, access is limited to buses, taxis, and bicycles. Visitors should therefore check transportation arrangements when planning their trip.

A Spectacular Destination from Spring to Autumn

Spring through autumn is an excellent time to visit Sanbondaki Falls for sightseeing, hiking, and photography. Each season offers a different atmosphere, from fresh greenery to brilliant autumn foliage. In winter, heavy snow covers the area and access along the walking trail is restricted.

With its three distinctive cascades, volcanic landscape, mountain forests, and history of spiritual practice, Sanbondaki Falls offers a rare combination of natural grandeur and quiet mystery. Its changing appearance throughout the seasons makes it one of the signature scenic destinations of Norikura Kogen and a rewarding place to slow down and experience the natural beauty of the Japanese Alps.
