Bandokoro Otaki Falls

A Powerful Waterfall Surrounded by the Natural Beauty of Norikura

Bandokoro Otaki Falls is one of the signature waterfalls of Norikura Kogen, located in the Bandokoro area of Azumi, Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture. With a drop of approximately 40 meters and a width of about 15 meters, it is one of the three celebrated waterfalls known as the Three Waterfalls of Norikura, together with Sanbondaki Falls and Zengoro Falls.

From Prefectural Route 84, the Norikuradake Line, a steep walking trail descends for about five minutes before the waterfall suddenly appears between the trees. The powerful cascade sends a fine spray as far as the viewing platform, allowing visitors to experience the force of the water at close range.

A Landscape Created by the Norikura Volcano

Bandokoro Otaki Falls was formed by Bansho Lava, a type of augite-hypersthene andesite that erupted from the area around Kengamine on the Norikura volcano. In ancient times, the flowing lava filled a deep valley that existed in this region, eventually creating the extensive lava plateau that forms much of today’s Norikura Kogen.

Near the waterfall, the lava layer reaches approximately 60 meters in thickness. Plate-like joints have developed throughout this enormous rock formation, providing a fascinating opportunity to observe the geological structure created by ancient volcanic activity.

The Kōdai-no-gawa River Creates a Spectacular Cascade

Bandokoro Otaki Falls was created as the Kōdai-no-gawa River eroded the edge of this volcanic lava plateau and plunged downward. Fed by abundant water, the waterfall continues to thunder throughout the seasons, sending clouds of white spray into the air.

The combination of the roaring water, enormous rock formations, and surrounding forest creates an unforgettable natural spectacle. Nearby, a smaller waterfall called Bandokoro Kotaki offers a quieter atmosphere. Walking through the area while listening to the sound of flowing water provides a pleasant contrast to the dramatic main waterfall.

A Short but Scenic Forest Walk

A parking area, restrooms, and a bus stop are located near the entrance to the waterfall trail. Although the trail is short, it includes a relatively steep section, with exposed tree roots and rocks in places. The path is maintained for safe access, and the viewing platform can be reached in approximately five minutes.

From the viewing platform, visitors can look directly toward the waterfall basin and watch the water plunge almost vertically into the gorge below. The close-up view makes it easy to appreciate the sheer scale and power of the falls.

Senkanbuchi Gorge and Seasonal Wildflowers

Slightly upstream from Bandokoro Otaki Falls lies Senkanbuchi, a deep pool surrounded by a scenic gorge. The Senkanbuchi Walking Trail is another popular route for exploring the area and offers a closer look at the natural landscape around the Kōdai-no-gawa River.

The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. In May, Hime-ichige flowers bloom along the trail. June brings Iwakamakura and Japanese azaleas, while Yagurumasō appears in July. In autumn, Japanese maple and other deciduous trees turn brilliant shades of red and orange, adding vivid color to the gorge.

The entire walking route takes approximately 20 minutes at a leisurely pace, making it an enjoyable short nature walk for visitors who want to experience the seasonal scenery of Norikura Kogen.

Access and Nearby Attractions

The most convenient access is the Bandokoro Otaki Bus Stop served by Alpico Transportation. A parking area is located immediately beside the bus stop, and signs along the prefectural road make the entrance easy to find when arriving by car.

Other points of interest in the surrounding area include Ōnogawa Elementary and Junior High School, Oike Pond, and Azusamizu Shrine, located a little farther downstream. These sites can be incorporated into a wider exploration of the natural and cultural landscape of Norikura.

The Dramatic Beauty of Norikura Kogen

Bandokoro Otaki Falls is a spectacular meeting point between ancient volcanic activity and the clear waters of the Kōdai-no-gawa River. The powerful cascade, enormous lava formations, quiet forest, and changing seasonal scenery together create a landscape that represents the grandeur of Norikura Kogen.

Whether viewed from the waterfall platform or explored along the Senkanbuchi trail, Bandokoro Otaki Falls offers an impressive encounter with the raw power and quiet beauty of the Japanese Alps.
