Teraogahara Senbonzakura Park - 1000 Cherry Trees

A Spectacular Spring Landscape Framed by a Tunnel of Cherry Blossoms

Teraogahara Senbonzakura Park is located in Seki City, Gifu Prefecture. In spring, approximately 1,000 cherry trees burst into bloom, creating a magnificent tunnel of blossoms that makes the park one of Gifu Prefecture’s most celebrated cherry blossom destinations.

The park has also been selected as one of the 33 Best Cherry Blossom Spots in Hida and Mino, a list compiled by Gifu Prefecture. Every year, it attracts large numbers of visitors eager to experience its beautiful spring scenery.

The Cherry Blossom Tunnel and Its Beauty

Approximately 1,000 cherry trees grow throughout the park and typically reach full bloom in mid-April. The rows of trees extend for about 2 kilometers, forming a spectacular tunnel of cherry blossoms along the road.

During the flowering season, traditional paper lanterns called bonbori decorate the avenue, while numerous food stalls create a lively festival atmosphere. At night, the cherry trees are illuminated, transforming the area into a magical landscape that offers a different charm from the daytime scenery.

Thanks to its remarkable beauty, Teraogahara Senbonzakura Park has been selected as one of the 33 Best Cherry Blossom Spots in Hida and Mino.

The 2-kilometer avenue of cherry trees runs along a prefectural road connecting Terao Pass, at an elevation of approximately 220 meters, with the Terao district in the northern part of Mugegawa Town, Seki City. Cherry trees planted on both sides of the road form an impressive floral tunnel.

When illuminated after dark, the blossoms take on an enchanting appearance, offering visitors a completely different experience from the daytime views.

The Story Behind the Park’s Creation

The history of Teraogahara Senbonzakura Park dates back to the early Shōwa period. After World War II, Gifu Bus services began operating in the area in 1950. A long-awaited bus route reached the district in 1951, helping to inspire local residents to plant cherry trees along the prefectural road between Terao Pass and the Terao district.

In 1952, residents of the Terao community joined together to plant 300 cherry saplings. This community effort marked the beginning of what would become Teraogahara Senbonzakura.

The trees were planted with hopes for lasting peace in the postwar years. Today, the area is widely recognized as a popular cherry blossom destination. In 1969, it was designated as part of the Oku-Nagara Prefectural Natural Park.

A Destination to Enjoy with All Five Senses

Teraogahara Senbonzakura Park offers more than beautiful flowers. It is a place where visitors can enjoy the natural surroundings through all five senses.

During spring, numerous small eateries and tea stalls line the avenue, allowing visitors to enjoy food and refreshments while admiring the blossoms. Located in a mountainous area at an elevation of approximately 220 meters, the park also offers a peaceful atmosphere where visitors can hear birdsong and other natural sounds.

During the flowering season, gentle breezes carry the delicate fragrance of the cherry blossoms. By taking in the colors, aromas, sounds, and flavors of the season while feeling the fresh mountain air, visitors can enjoy a particularly memorable experience.

Best Time to Visit and Seasonal Events

The cherry blossoms at Teraogahara Senbonzakura Park are generally at their best from early to mid-April, although the exact timing varies with the weather each year.

The cherry-lined road connecting Terao Pass and the Terao district creates a beautiful floral tunnel that stretches for approximately 2 kilometers. During the flowering season, nighttime illumination adds another dimension to the scenery, making the blossoms glow against the darkness.

Whether visiting during the day to appreciate the delicate colors of the flowers or in the evening to enjoy the illuminated trees, visitors can experience one of Gifu Prefecture’s most memorable spring landscapes.
