Located at the summit of Mount Kinka in Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture, Gifu Kinkazan Squirrel Village is a unique animal attraction where visitors can interact with Taiwan squirrels. Opened in 1965, it was Japan’s first squirrel park.
The squirrels have been trained over many years and live freely in a spacious, open enclosure. One of the highlights is the opportunity to feed them and observe these lively little animals up close as they eagerly enjoy their food.
The village is home to Taiwan squirrels and is managed by Gifu Kanko Sakudo Co., Ltd., the operator of the Mount Kinka Ropeway. It is conveniently located near the ropeway’s summit station, along the route toward Gifu Castle.
The approximately 100-tsubo enclosure, equivalent to around 330 square meters, allows visitors to interact with the squirrels in an open setting. Wearing protective leather gloves, visitors can offer food to the squirrels and watch them approach and eat at close range.
Gifu Kinkazan Squirrel Village opened in 1965 (Showa 40), becoming the first squirrel park in Japan. Today, it remains a popular attraction for families, animal lovers, and anyone looking for a memorable wildlife experience in Gifu.
Since the squirrel village is located right in front of the Mount Kinka Ropeway’s summit station, it is easy to include in a sightseeing itinerary that also features Gifu Castle and the surrounding mountain area. Visitors can enjoy a close encounter with squirrels while exploring one of Gifu City’s most famous landmarks.
