Shokoji Temple (Chino City)

A Temple Surrounded by Late-Blooming Cherry Blossoms in the Highlands

A Temple Dedicated to Traffic Safety and One of Honshu’s Latest Cherry Blossom Spots

Shokoji Temple is located in the Tateshina Highlands of Chino City, Nagano Prefecture. Established in 1970, the temple stands at an elevation of approximately 1,200 meters and is known for its beautiful late-blooming cherry blossoms in spring. Officially, it is a branch temple of the historic Yakushiji Temple in Nara and belongs to the Hosso school of Buddhism.

Surrounded by the clean mountain air of the Tateshina Highlands, Shokoji offers a peaceful place of worship as well as a scenic destination where visitors can enjoy the changing beauty of nature throughout the year.

A Temple Founded by the Toyota Group for Traffic Safety

Shokoji is particularly notable for its connection with the Toyota Group, which established the temple with the hope of creating a society free from traffic accidents. The site was formerly occupied by the Tateshina Branch of Kitayama Elementary School in the former Kitayama Village, where the children of local settlers once studied.

The temple was founded in 1970 on the former school grounds with the wish to promote safety on the roads. Its formal opening ceremony was held on July 9 of the same year, with Gyoin Hashimoto, an elder of Yakushiji Temple in Nara, invited to conduct the solemn Buddhist ceremony.

Since then, Shokoji has upheld three principal missions: praying for traffic safety, commemorating victims of traffic accidents, and praying for the speedy recovery of those injured in accidents. These traditions have made the temple an unusual and meaningful place of worship connected with modern automobile society.

The Annual Traffic Safety Grand Festival

Every July, Shokoji holds its annual summer grand festival, during which many people gather to pray for traffic safety. Senior representatives of the Toyota Group and other related organizations take part in the ceremony.

As a temple established by a corporate group specifically for traffic safety, the festival has a distinctive place in both the local community and Japan’s automobile industry. It provides an opportunity to experience how a modern concern such as road safety can be expressed through a traditional religious setting.

One of Honshu’s Latest-Blooming Yoshino Cherry Trees

Another major attraction of Shokoji is its spectacular display of cherry blossoms. Approximately 300 Yoshino cherry trees are planted within the temple grounds. Because the temple stands at a relatively high elevation, the blossoms appear considerably later than those in many other parts of Japan.

The trees generally reach full bloom from late April to early May, around Japan’s Golden Week holiday period. This makes Shokoji famous for having some of the latest-blooming cherry blossoms on Honshu, attracting many visitors who have missed the main cherry blossom season elsewhere in Japan.

The Shokoji Cherry Blossom Festival

The annual Shokoji Cherry Blossom Festival is held to coincide with the flowering season. Local residents and travelers gather at the temple to enjoy the blossoms and seasonal hospitality.

Visitors may be offered warm tonjiru, a hearty Japanese pork and vegetable soup. An outdoor tea ceremony known as nodate is also held, allowing guests to enjoy freshly prepared matcha while surrounded by the cool spring air of the highlands.

When nighttime illumination is held, the atmosphere changes completely. Softly lit cherry blossoms stand out against the mountains of Tateshina, where the last traces of winter snow may still remain, creating an enchanting spring landscape unlike the daytime scenery.

Beautiful Autumn Colors

Shokoji is not only a spring destination. In autumn, the cherry trees and other vegetation around the temple turn shades of red and yellow, transforming the grounds into a colorful seasonal landscape.

With the quiet scenery of Lake Tateshina nearby, visitors can enjoy the crisp mountain air and peaceful atmosphere. The combination of traditional temple architecture and the changing colors of the highland forest makes autumn another rewarding time to visit.

A Peaceful Space Where Traffic Safety and Nature Meet

Shokoji is more than a cherry blossom viewing spot. It continues to be preserved as a place where people pray for safety and peace in their everyday lives. Its history reflects the Toyota Group’s emphasis on safety and security, while its natural surroundings offer a distinctly Japanese setting where religious tradition and the mountain environment exist side by side.

The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. Spring brings delicate cherry blossoms, summer brings fresh greenery, autumn covers the grounds in brilliant colors, and winter creates a quiet landscape of snow and bare trees. Each season offers a different way to experience this tranquil temple.

Access and Nearby Attractions

Shokoji is located near Lake Tateshina along the scenic Venus Line. From central Chino, follow the Venus Line toward Lake Shirakaba. The temple can be recognized by its beautiful temple buildings visible across the lake.

During the cherry blossom season, the area becomes particularly lively. Around Lake Tateshina, visitors can also find cafés, souvenir shops, and walking paths where they can enjoy the natural scenery of the Tateshina Highlands.

Nearby attractions include the Tateshina Amusement Aquarium and the Tateshina Kogen Barakura English Garden, making it possible to combine a visit to Shokoji with several other attractions in the Tateshina area.

A Temple Welcoming Spring to the Tateshina Highlands

Shokoji Temple was founded as a place to pray for traffic safety, yet it has also become widely loved as one of the region’s most distinctive cherry blossom destinations. At an elevation of around 1,200 meters, the clear mountain air and peaceful temple grounds provide a beautiful setting for the late arrival of spring.

The sight of approximately 300 Yoshino cherry trees in full bloom is especially memorable, while the temple’s history and traditions give the landscape a deeper cultural character. Whether visiting during the cherry blossom season, autumn foliage, or the quiet winter months, Shokoji offers travelers a chance to experience the serene beauty of the Tateshina Highlands while discovering a unique aspect of modern Japanese religious culture.
