Honzawa Onsen

A Secluded Hot Spring Above the Clouds

Honzawa Onsen is a remote hot spring in the mountains of Mt. Yatsugatake in Minamimaki Village, Minamisaku District, Nagano Prefecture. Located at an elevation of approximately 2,150 meters, it is renowned as one of Japan’s highest-altitude hot springs.

Reaching Honzawa Onsen requires hiking, as there is no direct access by car or public transportation. The journey through the mountain landscape is an essential part of the experience, allowing visitors to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the surrounding wilderness.

Kumo-no-Ue-no-Yu: Japan’s Highest Open-Air Hot Spring

The outdoor bath known as Kumo-no-Ue-no-Yu, meaning “Hot Spring Above the Clouds,” is the symbol of Honzawa Onsen. At approximately 2,150 meters above sea level, it is known as Japan’s highest-altitude open-air hot spring. From the bath, visitors can enjoy an impressive view of the rugged volcanic landscape of Mt. Iodake, including its dramatic crater.

Even in summer, reaching the bath requires more than an hour of hiking, while winter conditions can make the journey take more than four hours. The demanding approach adds to the sense of adventure and makes soaking in the hot spring particularly rewarding.

The small outdoor bath can accommodate around three or four people. There is no changing room or privacy screen, leaving bathers completely surrounded by the mountain landscape. The experience is less about luxury and more about enjoying the remarkable feeling of becoming one with nature.

A marker beside the bath bears the words “Japan’s Highest Open-Air Hot Spring,” highlighting the unique character of this remarkable mountain hot spring.

A Historic Mountain Lodge and Hot Spring

The history of Honzawa Onsen dates back to 1882, when it was established as a traditional hot spring inn. Today, it also serves as a mountain lodge beloved by hikers and mountaineers exploring the Yatsugatake range.

The indoor bath is available 24 hours a day, allowing guests to enjoy a relaxing soak at different times of the day. Because the indoor and outdoor baths have different spring characteristics, visitors can experience a different feel depending on which bath they choose.

Honzawa Onsen remains open during winter, making it one of the highest-altitude hot spring accommodations in Japan that operates throughout the year. In addition to lodging, the site has a camping area, allowing visitors to combine hiking, camping, and hot spring bathing in an unforgettable mountain adventure.

Autumn is another especially beautiful season to visit, when the surrounding mountains are covered with vibrant foliage.

Distinctive Hot Spring Water

Honzawa Onsen is remarkable not only for its location and scenery but also for its mineral-rich water. The spring is classified as an acidic sulfur-containing calcium-magnesium sulfate spring, giving the water distinctive characteristics.

The indoor and outdoor baths have different water qualities, making it possible to enjoy contrasting bathing experiences during the same stay.

Access: A Mountain Journey to a Remote Hot Spring

Honzawa Onsen is a true secluded hot spring and cannot be reached directly by car or public transportation. Visitors must approach it on foot, and the hiking time varies considerably depending on the season and route.

Access by Public Transportation

From Matsubarako Station on the JR Koumi Line, take the Koumi Town community bus bound for Inagoyu and get off at the final stop. From there, follow the hiking trail via Shirabiso Hut. The walk takes approximately three and a half hours.

Another route begins at Chino Station on the JR Chuo Main Line. Take an Alpico Kotsu bus on the Mugikusa Pass route and get off at either Mugikusa Pass or Lake Shirakoma. From there, the hike takes approximately four to four and a half hours.

Access by Car

From the Saku Interchange on the Joshin-Etsu Expressway, it takes approximately one hour to reach the parking area for ordinary passenger cars. From there, Honzawa Onsen is about a two-hour walk in summer.

A four-wheel-drive vehicle parking area provides a shorter summer route, with approximately one hour of hiking required from the parking area. In winter, conditions become much more demanding, and the walk from the entrance to the Honzawa Forest Road can take approximately five hours.

What to Know Before Visiting

Because of its remote mountain location, Honzawa Onsen is designated by Japan Post as an area with difficult transportation access, and postal deliveries are not available. Mobile phone reception can also be limited.

Visitors should therefore carefully plan their hiking route, check seasonal conditions, and prepare appropriate clothing, food, water, navigation equipment, and other necessary mountain gear before setting out.

Experience a Hot Spring Above the Clouds

Honzawa Onsen offers a rare combination of high-altitude wilderness, historic hot spring culture, and an extraordinary outdoor bathing experience. At approximately 2,150 meters above sea level, the journey itself is part of the attraction.

After hiking through the mountains of Yatsugatake, soaking in Kumo-no-Ue-no-Yu while looking toward the dramatic slopes of Mt. Iodake creates an experience that is difficult to find anywhere else in Japan. For travelers seeking an authentic mountain adventure away from the crowds, Honzawa Onsen offers a memorable encounter with the natural beauty of the Japanese Alps.
