Inagoyu Onsen

A Secluded Hot Spring Surrounded by the Forests of Yatsugatake

Inagoyu Onsen is a historic hot spring in the Inago area of Koumi Town, Nagano Prefecture. Located at an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters at the foot of the Northern Yatsugatake Mountains, the hot spring is surrounded by quiet coniferous forests and pristine mountain air.

Far from the noise and bustle of the cities, Inagoyu offers a peaceful retreat where visitors can enjoy the healing atmosphere of the mountains. Its rustic, mountain-lodge-style inn is particularly popular with hikers exploring Northern Yatsugatake and travelers seeking a quiet traditional hot spring experience.

A Mountain Hot Spring in a Pristine Natural Setting

Inagoyu Onsen stands at approximately 1,460 meters above sea level, surrounded by exceptionally clear air and dense mountain forests. The peaceful setting and scent of the surrounding trees create an atmosphere of deep relaxation.

The bathing facilities are simple, with an indoor bath rather than a large resort-style spa. This simplicity is part of the appeal: visitors can slow down, soak in the mineral-rich water, and enjoy the quiet rhythm of the mountain environment.

Day-use bathing is also available, making Inagoyu a convenient place to rest and wash away the fatigue of a hike. The hot spring is also known as one of the filming locations for the Japanese mountain-climbing movie Gaku, making it an interesting destination for fans of the film.

Mineral-Rich Spring Water

The source is a cold mineral spring with a temperature of approximately 7.6°C and is heated before being used for bathing. It is classified as a carbon dioxide- and sulfur-containing cold mineral spring. Traditionally, its therapeutic uses have included bathing for conditions such as digestive disorders and neuralgia.

The spring water can also be consumed as drinking water, allowing visitors to experience the natural benefits of the source in another way.

Inagoyu Ryokan: A Rustic Mountain Inn

The hot spring is home to Inagoyu Ryokan, a small mountain-lodge-style inn that operates throughout the year. Its simple, welcoming atmosphere makes it a natural place to relax after hiking through the mountains.

Guests can enjoy traditional meals and hot spring bathing while surrounded by the forests of Northern Yatsugatake. The inn also welcomes visitors who come only for a day bath, making it a convenient base for hikers before or after their mountain adventures.

A Gateway to Hiking in Northern Yatsugatake

One of Inagoyu’s greatest attractions is its location as a gateway to the hiking trails of Northern Yatsugatake. The inn is surrounded by coniferous forest, providing a peaceful place to prepare for a mountain excursion.

Popular hiking destinations from the area include Mount Nyū, Nakayama Pass, and Natsuzawa Pass. Routes that pass through Honzawa Onsen, one of Japan’s highest hot spring accommodations, are also popular among experienced hikers.

Hiking Toward Mount Nyū

Routes toward Mount Nyū offer the opportunity to combine mountain scenery with visits to Takamiishi and Lake Shirakoma. The trail passes through the distinctive moss-covered forests for which Northern Yatsugatake is known.

Hiking Toward Natsuzawa Pass

The route toward Natsuzawa Pass can be combined with a visit to Honzawa Onsen before continuing into the wider Yatsugatake mountain trail network.

Hiking Toward Mount Tengu

Mount Tengu is one of the best-known peaks in Yatsugatake. Hiking routes from the Inagoyu area provide access to the dramatic mountain scenery and rugged landscapes surrounding the peak.

Access to Inagoyu Onsen

By Public Transportation

Inagoyu Onsen can be reached by the Koumi Town community bus. From Matsubarako Station on the JR Koumi Line, also known as the Yatsugatake Kogen Line, visitors can take the Matsubarako Line and get off at the Inagoyu stop.

The Matsubarako Line generally does not operate during the winter season, roughly from November through April. During this period, visitors should consider using a taxi or walking, depending on weather and road conditions.

Another option is to take the bus to the Inago Hiking Trail Entrance and continue on foot for approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.

By Car

By car, Inagoyu can be reached via the Natsuzawa Pass–Inagoyu Forest Road or Nagano Prefectural Route 480, the Matsubarako Kogen Line. Mountain roads may be closed during winter, so travelers should check road conditions before setting out.

After hiking through the forests of Northern Yatsugatake, soaking in the warm waters while surrounded by mountain silence is a memorable way to end the day.

Whether used as a base for exploring Mount Tengu, Mount Nyū, Natsuzawa Pass and Honzawa Onsen, or simply as a secluded place to escape everyday life, Inagoyu Onsen offers a refreshing encounter with the mountains of Nagano.
