The National New Fireworks Competition is a spectacular fireworks competition held every year on the first Saturday of September on Lake Suwa in Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture. Together with the Suwa Lake Fireworks Festival held on August 15, it is one of the two major fireworks events associated with Suwa.
Rather than simply presenting a large-scale fireworks display, this event gives young fireworks artists from across Japan a stage on which to showcase their creativity, technical skills, and original ideas.
While the main Suwa Lake fireworks festival features a large number of fireworks artists and performers, the National New Fireworks Competition is particularly known as an important opportunity for young fireworks makers to establish themselves.
Participants come from different parts of Japan and present newly created fireworks of their own design. Their works are judged on qualities such as artistic expression, technical skill, and originality.
Each fireworks artist develops a unique theme and creates a performance in which music and fireworks are carefully coordinated. The combination of sound and light transforms the display into something resembling a visual story, creating moments designed to move and surprise the audience.
Each entry consists of a set of six individual fireworks and one starmine, with one creation following another to fill the night sky with constantly changing patterns and colors.
The climax of the competition is the famous Suwa Lake floating starmine. Fireworks are launched simultaneously from the surface of the lake, producing brilliant reflections across the water.
The result is a spectacular scene in which the night sky and lake surface appear to become one vast canvas of light. Watching the fireworks reflected in the calm waters of Lake Suwa creates a particularly memorable experience that is unique to this lakeside setting.
The origins of the event can be traced back to 1983, when a fireworks display of approximately 15 minutes was held as part of the fourth Mori no Nigiwai “Suwa Myojin Furusato Festival.” With cooperation from the Japan Travel Bureau, now known as JTB, this display is regarded as the starting point of what would become today’s competition.
The event developed into a competitive fireworks program the following year. For several years, it was held alongside local events such as Mori no Nigiwai and Suwa Yoiteko.
In 1993, the fireworks event became independent and was held as a standalone festival. The following year, it was organized as the “Fireworks Summit in Lake Suwa — New Fireworks Festival,” with participation limited to young fireworks artists. This established the basic format that continues today.
In 1996, the event was renamed the National New Fireworks Competition. Outstanding works began receiving awards including the Kanto Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry Award and the Nagano Prefecture Governor’s Award.
From the 22nd competition in 2004, the prestigious Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award was introduced as the highest honor, further establishing the event as an important national competition for new fireworks creations.
The National New Fireworks Competition is much more than a fireworks show. It is a creative stage where young fireworks artists express their ideas, imagination, and technical expertise.
Because participants are encouraged to create new forms of expression, the works presented can be completely different from one year to the next. For spectators, this means that each edition offers new surprises rather than simply repeating familiar displays.
On a clear autumn evening, the crisp air of the season provides a beautiful setting for the combination of music and light. Fireworks bloom high above Lake Suwa while their reflections shimmer across the water, creating an atmosphere that feels almost like a live work of art.
For travelers visiting the Suwa region in early autumn, the National New Fireworks Competition offers an opportunity to experience the creativity and craftsmanship of Japan’s fireworks tradition in an especially atmospheric lakeside setting. The passion of the next generation of fireworks artists comes alive above the water, turning Lake Suwa into a spectacular stage of light.
