Ryujin Falls is an impressive waterfall with a drop of approximately 8 meters, located in Yumori Gorge in Gifu Prefecture. Its exceptionally clear water is listed among the 50 Famous Waters of Gifu Prefecture and is said to change color as many as seven times a day, shifting between shades of cobalt blue and emerald blue.
A legend tells of a white dragon that once lived at the waterfall, adding to its mysterious atmosphere. The deep pool at the foot of the falls further enhances the beauty and mystique of this natural attraction.
The waterfall is located within Yumori Park, a recreational area at an elevation of approximately 700 meters. The fast-flowing Kawakami River, part of the Kiso River system, forms several waterfalls as it winds through the mountains before joining the Kiso River.
Five waterfalls can be found within the park, with Ryujin Falls situated at the lowest point along the river. Walking paths allow visitors to approach the waterfall and admire it up close. During the main season, colorful illumination creates a magical nighttime atmosphere, making the falls a popular destination for evening strolls and enjoying the cool air.
Ryujin Falls lies along the Kawakami River, which rises near Mount Okusankai, at the southernmost end of the Central Alps. Forests of Japanese cypress, hiba arborvitae, and koyamaki umbrella pine extend along the river, creating beautiful scenery with the clear streams and cascading waterfalls.
In addition to Ryujin Falls, four other waterfalls can be explored nearby: Bōrin Falls, Dōana Falls, Aze Falls, and Hitotsu Falls. Together, they offer an enjoyable waterfall-hopping experience through the gorge.
The Kawakami River frequently overflowed in the past, causing serious flooding in the surrounding villages. To protect themselves, local residents enshrined a stone engraved with characters.
According to legend, one day a wrongdoer complained that the stone was in the way and kicked it into the waterfall. A white dragon then appeared before the villagers and ascended into the sky.
Thunder roared, and heavy rain began to fall. The mountains collapsed, houses and farmland were swept away, and the village was left devastated.
From that time onward, the villagers are said to have built a magnificent shrine to appease the anger of the Dragon God and continued to worship the deity with great reverence. This legend remains an important part of the waterfall’s mysterious character.
Walking trails around Ryujin Falls allow visitors to explore the area while enjoying the clear streams and seasonal foliage. A stroll can include visits to Ryujin Shrine, Momiji Bridge, and all five waterfalls. The park is also a pleasant destination for scenic drives, motorcycle touring, and leisurely walks.
Each season offers a different experience. Summer is especially popular for camping, playing in the river, trout fishing, and barbecues. In autumn, the surrounding mountains turn brilliant shades of red and gold.
The annual Yumori Momiji Festival is held during the autumn foliage season, generally from late October to mid-November. At Ryujin Shrine, which is believed to bring good fortune in competitions and contests, visitors can dedicate wooden votive plaques, known as ema, with their wishes.
