Mizunami Fossil Museum

Travel Back in Time to an Ancient Sea: Discover a World from 20 Million Years Ago

The Mizunami Fossil Museum is a museum located in Mizunami City, Gifu Prefecture. It opened in 1974 and features an extensive collection of fossils, with a particular focus on fossils from the Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic Era. The museum houses approximately 10,000 fossil specimens on display, including fossils of dinosaurs, fish, and plants. It also conducts research and educational activities related to fossils.

Travel Back in Time to an Ancient Sea

Mizunami City and the surrounding area contain geological formations created in lakes and seas during the Miocene Epoch of the Cenozoic Era, approximately 20 million to 15 million years ago. Known as the Mizunami Group, these formations have yielded fossils of around 1,500 species, including shellfish, fish, mammals, and plants.

A Rich Collection and Fascinating Exhibits

The museum houses and preserves more than 250,000 fossil specimens collected during construction of the Chuo Expressway and from various locations throughout the city. Approximately 3,000 fossils are displayed in the permanent exhibition galleries, offering a glimpse into the time when the Mizunami area was covered by lakes and seas.

Highlights of the Exhibition

Desmostylus

At the entrance to the exhibition area stands a skeleton of Desmostylus, an extinct marine mammal that flourished during the Cenozoic Era. The world’s first fossil skull of this animal was discovered in Mizunami City. Visitors can also take a closer look at its distinctive teeth, whose unusual shape makes this ancient mammal particularly intriguing.

Baleen Whale, Isanacetus, and Ezoyigai

An exhibition area opened on July 3, 2018, displays fossils discovered at the construction site of Mizunami Kita Junior High School. The exhibit also includes an artist’s reconstruction illustrating the ancient environment, based on evidence obtained from the fossils.

Shell Fossils: Vicarya

The Mizunami Group has yielded a wide variety of shell fossils. Exhibits include beautifully preserved shells with their original outer coverings intact, as well as specimens known as “Tsuki no Osagari,” in which the interior has been replaced by minerals such as opal or calcite.

Geological Observation Site

Along the road near Heso-yama, east of the museum, visitors can observe exposed geological strata belonging to the Mizunami Group. Features include shell fossils, fossilized shrimp burrows, and tuff formed from accumulated volcanic ash.

The geological formations and fossils in this area are designated as natural monuments and are protected for their scientific and educational value.

The Museum’s Mission and Activities

The museum’s central theme is to reconstruct changes in the natural world over the past 20 million years through fossils and geology. Its exhibitions feature fossils of shellfish, fish, mammals, plants, and other organisms discovered in Mizunami City.

Special exhibitions are also held, showcasing rare specimens and fossils that are unique in the world. These displays offer visitors an opportunity to explore the mysteries of prehistoric life and the fascinating history of the Earth.

Hands-On Fossil Excavation

One of the museum’s popular activities is its fossil excavation program, which allows visitors to search for fossils themselves. Under the guidance of specialist staff, participants can look for fossils at designated excavation sites in Mizunami City.

This hands-on experience is suitable for both children and adults and is particularly popular with families. It provides an exciting way to connect with the ancient past while learning how fossils are discovered and studied.

The museum also regularly organizes workshops and lectures on geology and paleontology. Through these educational programs, participants can deepen their understanding of Earth’s history and the evolution of life.

Exhibits and Collections

The museum presents exhibits exploring the history of the Earth and the evolution of living organisms. One notable highlight is the fossil of the “Great Mizunami Whale,” which measures approximately 15 meters in length and is described as one of the largest whale fossils in Japan.

Educational Programs and Learning Opportunities

In addition to fossil excavation experiences, the museum regularly holds workshops and lectures on geology and paleontology. These programs help visitors learn more about the processes that shaped the Earth and the development of life over millions of years.

Facilities and Services

Beyond its fossil exhibitions, the museum offers a library where visitors can browse books and reference materials, as well as a museum shop. A café area is also available, allowing visitors to take a break during their visit.

Access and Nearby Attractions

The Mizunami Fossil Museum is approximately a 10-minute drive from JR Mizunami Station. Visitors traveling by public transportation can also take a bus from the station.

Nearby attractions include the Mizunami City Museum of Natural Science and Mizunami Onsen, making it possible to combine a museum visit with other local sightseeing activities.

Discover the Earth’s Ancient History

The Mizunami Fossil Museum offers a valuable opportunity to explore the history of the Earth and the evolution of life through its fossil exhibits and hands-on excavation experiences. It is an engaging destination for families, school groups, and anyone interested in natural history. If you visit Mizunami City, be sure to stop by and discover the fascinating world preserved in its fossils.
