Beni Imo - Red Sweet Potato

Okinawa’s Vibrant Purple Sweet Potato

Beni imo is one of Okinawa’s most distinctive and beloved ingredients. This special type of sweet potato is characterized by its vivid reddish-purple to deep purple flesh, which gives Okinawan cuisine and sweets their striking color.

A Signature Ingredient of Okinawa

Beni imo accounts for a large share of sweet potato consumption in Okinawa and is cultivated throughout the prefecture. Its naturally vibrant color comes from polyphenols with antioxidant properties, and the sweet potato is used in a remarkably wide range of products.

It can be enjoyed as a traditional food ingredient, but its beautiful color and naturally sweet flavor have also made it popular in cakes, ice cream, confectionery, and other desserts. Beni imo is even used in cosmetics, demonstrating how deeply this distinctive Okinawan crop has become connected with local products and culture.

From Yomitan Village to Okinawa’s Fields

Several varieties of beni imo are grown in Okinawa, including Bise, Okinume Murasaki, Beni Azuma, and Miyanō 36. Although cultivation takes place across the islands, Yomitan Beni Imo, grown in Yomitan Village in Okinawa’s central region, is particularly well known.

Yomitan’s beni imo has become closely associated with the local agricultural landscape and is also widely used in Okinawan sweets and souvenir products. For visitors traveling through central Okinawa, it is one of the region’s most recognizable local flavors.

From Field to Harvest

The recommended planting period generally runs from March through October. After planting, the sweet potatoes can be harvested in approximately five to seven months, depending on growing conditions.

The main season arrives from September through December, when freshly harvested beni imo is at its seasonal best. The rich purple color makes dishes and desserts especially eye-catching, while its gentle sweetness works beautifully in both traditional and modern recipes.

More Than Just a Sweet Potato

Beni imo has become much more than an agricultural product. Its distinctive color, flavor, and versatility have made it one of the ingredients most strongly associated with Okinawan food culture.

From freshly prepared dishes to purple sweet potato cakes, ice cream, pastries, and other sweets, beni imo offers travelers a chance to taste Okinawa in a form that is both traditional and visually unforgettable.
