Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort

One of Japan’s Great Long-Run Ski Destinations

Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort is one of Japan’s most historic and expansive ski resorts, located in the mountain village of Nozawaonsen in northern Nagano Prefecture. With its combination of extensive ski terrain, impressive vertical drop, deep winter snow, and a traditional hot spring village at its doorstep, the resort offers a uniquely Japanese winter experience.

A Legendary Ski Area with a 10-Kilometer Long Run

One of the biggest attractions of Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort is its exceptionally long continuous run. From the upper Yamabiko area, skiers can descend through Uenotaira, Paradise, Beginner Forest, and Hikage before reaching the lower slopes, creating a spectacular run of up to 10 kilometers.

The resort also has a vertical drop of approximately 1,085 meters from the summit area around Yamabiko to the lowest slopes at Karasawa. This dramatic change in elevation allows visitors to experience a wide variety of snow conditions, scenery, and terrain during a single descent.

A Historic Center of Japanese Ski Culture

Nozawa Onsen has played an important role in the development of skiing in Japan. Skiing was introduced to the village in 1912, and a local ski club was established in 1923. The first ski jump was built at Hikage in 1925, followed by a 50-meter-class jump in 1928.

The resort continued to develop throughout the 20th century. A ski lift was introduced in 1950, and facilities were gradually extended toward the higher slopes of Mt. Kenashi. Gondolas and modern lifts were subsequently added, transforming the historic ski area into a large-scale winter resort while retaining its traditional character.

Major Developments

1950: The first ski lift was installed.

1976: Lift service was extended toward the summit of Mt. Kenashi, and a ski museum was established.

1979: The original four-person Nagasaka Gondola was completed.

1984: The six-person Hikage Gondola began operation.

1990: The Nagasaka Gondola was upgraded to a 12-person system.

2016: The Hikage Pair Lift was replaced with the Hikage Four Lift.

2020: A new 10-person Nagasaka Gondola began operation.

A Wide Variety of Slopes for Every Level

With approximately 36 courses and more than 20 lifts, Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort offers terrain for beginners, families, intermediate skiers, and advanced riders. Gentle slopes and spacious beginner areas make it approachable for newcomers, while steep courses and competition terrain provide challenges for experienced skiers and snowboarders.

Hikage Slope

Hikage is closely associated with the history of skiing in Nozawa Onsen and is home to the Japan Ski Museum. Its relatively gentle terrain makes it particularly suitable for beginners and families, while its location near the village makes it one of the most convenient areas for enjoying the resort.

Challenge Course

For advanced skiers, the Challenge Course offers a steep descent with a maximum gradient of approximately 39 degrees. It is one of the resort’s more demanding areas and is designed for confident skiers seeking an exhilarating challenge.

Skyline Course

The Skyline Course combines distance, elevation change, and mountain scenery. Extending approximately 3.5 kilometers with a vertical drop of around 885 meters, it is an excellent choice for visitors who want to enjoy a long descent while taking in the surrounding landscape.

Yamabiko Slope

Located near the highest part of the resort, the Yamabiko area is known for its high-quality snow and beautiful winter scenery. Its terrain is particularly appealing to intermediate and advanced skiers.

Paradise Slope

The broad, gentle Paradise Slope provides comfortable terrain for beginners and those who prefer relaxed cruising. Its generous width makes it a popular place to practice turns and enjoy skiing at an easy pace.

Kandahar Course

The Kandahar Course is an FIS-approved competition course. When it is open to the general public, experienced skiers can enjoy the same demanding terrain used for competitive skiing.

More Than Just Skiing

Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort also offers distinctive activities that add variety to a winter visit. A zipline is available in the Hikage area, including during the ski season, allowing visitors to experience the snowy landscape from above.

On the Komaimo B Course, an automatic filming system known as Gere-Roku can record skiers as they descend. It is a fun way to preserve memories of your time on the slopes and review your skiing later.

Snow Conditions and Modern Resort Facilities

Like many ski resorts in Japan, Nozawa Onsen has adapted to changing winter conditions and fluctuations in natural snowfall. Artificial snowmaking systems have been introduced in areas such as Uenotaira and Yamabiko to help maintain stable skiing conditions.

At the same time, modern gondolas and lifts provide efficient access to the extensive mountain terrain, allowing visitors to spend more time skiing and less time traveling between slopes.

Pairing Skiing with Nozawa Onsen’s Traditional Hot Springs

One of the greatest pleasures of visiting Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort is that the slopes are directly connected with the historic Nozawa Onsen hot spring village. After a day in the snow, visitors can leave their ski equipment behind and explore the village, where traditional streets, inns, restaurants, and public hot spring baths create an authentic atmosphere.

The village is famous for its 13 public hot spring baths, known as soto-yu, which have long been maintained by the local community. Soaking in a hot spring after skiing offers a quintessential Japanese winter experience that is difficult to find at ordinary ski resorts.

A Complete Winter Experience in Northern Nagano

Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort brings together the elements that make winter travel in Japan special: abundant mountain snow, spectacular long runs, a rich skiing heritage, modern resort facilities, and a traditional hot spring village.

Whether you are an experienced skier looking for a long mountain descent, a snowboarder seeking quality powder snow, a beginner learning to ski, or a traveler who simply wants to experience a traditional Japanese winter village, Nozawa Onsen offers a memorable combination of outdoor adventure and cultural discovery.
