Yokote Mountain is a 2,307-meter-high volcanic mountain located on the border between Yamanouchi Town in Nagano Prefecture and Nakanojo Town in Gunma Prefecture. Situated at the southeastern edge of the Shiga Kogen area within Joshin’etsukogen National Park, the mountain also lies along the Central Tectonic Divide that separates the drainage basins flowing toward the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean.
With spectacular mountain scenery in every season, Yokote Mountain is a popular destination throughout the year. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views from above the clouds, hiking in summer and autumn, and snow-covered landscapes and winter sports during the colder months.
Yokote Mountain has an asymmetrical shape. Its southern and western slopes are relatively steep, while the northern and eastern sides have gentler inclines. On the Nagano side, the mountain forms part of the scenic Shiga Kogen highlands, an area developed for tourism and outdoor recreation. On the Gunma side are the famous hot spring resorts of Kusatsu Onsen and Manza Onsen.
National Route 292 connects the two regions and crosses the Central Tectonic Divide at Shibu Pass, just south of Yokote Mountain. At an elevation of 2,172 meters, Shibu Pass is known as the highest point on Japan’s national highway network.
The summit of Yokote Mountain is relatively broad and level in places. The eastern side rises gently, while the western side drops away dramatically, creating a striking contrast in the landscape.
A second-order triangulation point stands at the highest point on the southeastern side of the summit. Nearby is Yokote-yama Shrine, which has long been associated with mountain worship. In recent years, the area has also attracted visitors as a popular spiritual and scenic destination.
One of Yokote Mountain’s greatest attractions is its extraordinary panoramic scenery. On the second floor of the Yokote Sky Lift station at the northern end of the summit area, the Manten View Terrace provides an elevated viewpoint overlooking the surrounding mountains.
On clear days, the panorama can extend as far as Mount Fuji, the Northern Alps, and Sado Island. Another viewpoint, the Private Terrace at Crumpet Cafe, offers beautiful views toward the southwest.
Winter transforms Yokote Mountain into a fantastical world of snow and ice. The area’s tall Abies mariesii fir trees become covered in layers of snow and ice shaped by strong winds, creating spectacular formations known in Japan as snow monsters.
These frozen trees create an otherworldly landscape that is one of the highlights of winter in Shiga Kogen. Special Snow Monster Night Tours are also held at night, allowing visitors to experience the mysterious scenery beneath the darkness and winter sky.
Yokote Mountain was originally developed as a ski destination. Today, the ski slopes on the northwestern side are known as Yokote Mountain Ski Area, while the southeastern slopes form Shibu Pass Ski Area. Together, they are known as the Yokote Mountain and Shibu Pass Ski Area.
The area is particularly popular among skiers because of its spectacular elevation, mountain scenery, and convenient access. The high-altitude location also provides excellent winter conditions and expansive views across the surrounding landscape.
For experienced skiers, the mountain offers routes that provide a taste of backcountry skiing. One route descends from Yokote Mountain toward Kumano-yu, while routes from Shibu Pass lead toward the hot spring resorts of Manza and Kusatsu.
These routes offer varied terrain and a strong sense of adventure. Because mountain skiing involves changing snow and weather conditions as well as potentially hazardous terrain, appropriate experience, equipment, and preparation are essential.
Several distinctive facilities around the summit make it possible to enjoy the mountain without simply passing through. Visitors can stop for food and drinks while taking in the extraordinary views at high altitude.
2307 Sky Cafe is a mountain hut-style cafe located at an elevation of approximately 2,060 meters. It is particularly convenient for visitors and is known for having the only facility in the area equipped with a Western-style toilet with a bidet function.
One of its specialties is bamboo shoot pizza made with locally harvested nemagari-dake bamboo shoots. Enjoying a meal while looking across the high mountain landscape is one of the memorable experiences available on Yokote Mountain.
Yokote Sancho Hutte is famous as the highest-altitude bakery in Japan. It can be reached by the Sky-Lator and lifts, as well as by a private road or hiking trail.
Freshly baked bread is one of its main attractions, but the experience is about more than food. The lodge offers a chance to relax while surrounded by the extraordinary scenery of the mountains above the clouds.
Crumpet Cafe was renovated in 2020 and gained a new Private Terrace. Visitors can enjoy freshly prepared crumpets and drinks while taking in the panoramic scenery around the summit.
Shibu Pass Hotel is famous for its unusual location directly on the border between Nagano and Gunma prefectures. A line marking the prefectural boundary runs through the hotel, making it a popular spot for commemorative photographs.
The hotel also sells handmade bread, adding another local touch to this distinctive mountain destination.
The Shibu Pass Trail begins near the Shibu Pass parking area and takes approximately 30 minutes to reach the summit. A public restroom operated by Nakanojo Town is available near the trailhead.
The Yokote Trail begins near the Yokote Mountain Drive-in and takes approximately 50 minutes to reach the summit. Both routes provide an easy way to experience the high-altitude environment on foot.
From the Nagano side, Yokote Mountain can be reached by traveling through Yudanaka and Shiga Kogen. From Gunma, access is available via Kusatsu Onsen or the toll road known as the Manza Highway.
It is also possible to reach Yokote Sancho Hutte by private vehicle using a private road, but advance arrangements are required and the number of vehicles is limited.
The Yokote Sky-Lator is one of the signature attractions of Yokote Mountain. This unusual moving walkway carries visitors part of the way up the mountain and can be combined with a lift to reach the summit area comfortably.
During the summer season, a sightseeing circuit is also available, making it possible for families and casual visitors to enjoy the high-altitude scenery without undertaking a long mountain hike.
Yokote Mountain combines dramatic alpine scenery, traditional mountain worship, outdoor recreation, and distinctive high-altitude facilities. In summer and autumn, visitors can enjoy clear mountain views and fresh highland air, while winter brings deep snow, snow monsters, skiing, and magical nighttime scenery.
Whether you come for the panoramic views, a meal above the clouds, a mountain hike, or winter sports, Yokote Mountain offers a memorable encounter with the high mountains of Shiga Kogen in every season.
