Lake Aoki

A Crystal-Clear Lake Beneath the Northern Alps

Lake Aoki is a beautiful mountain lake in the northern part of Omachi City, Nagano Prefecture. It is the northernmost and largest of the Three Lakes of Nishina, a group that also includes Lake Nakatsuna and Lake Kizaki.

Known for its exceptionally clear water, Lake Aoki offers spectacular views of the Northern Alps reflected on its blue surface. Surrounded by forests and mountains, the lake changes character with every season, making it a popular destination for photographers, outdoor enthusiasts, and travelers seeking a peaceful escape into nature.

The lake has a distinctive heart-like shape, adding another charming feature to an already picturesque landscape. From cherry blossoms reflected on the water in spring to colorful forests in autumn and migratory birds in winter, Lake Aoki can be enjoyed throughout the year.

A Deep and Exceptionally Clear Mountain Lake

Lake Aoki covers approximately 1.7 square kilometers, making it the largest of the Three Lakes of Nishina. It is also one of the larger lakes in Nagano Prefecture, following Lake Suwa and Lake Nojiri, and ranks approximately 59th in Japan by surface area.

The lake sits at an elevation of approximately 822 meters and has a shoreline of about 6.5 kilometers. With a maximum depth of approximately 58 meters, it is the deepest lake in Nagano Prefecture.

Its water is remarkably transparent, with visibility reaching approximately 9.8 meters. The combination of deep blue water, surrounding forests, and the mountains of the Northern Alps creates some of the most striking lake scenery in the region.

Underground Springs and the Three Lakes of Nishina

One of Lake Aoki’s geographical mysteries is that it has no major inflowing river, yet its water level remains relatively stable. This is believed to be due to abundant underground springs on the lake floor.

The lake’s outflow forms the Nōgu River, which flows through Lake Nakatsuna and then Lake Kizaki, linking the Three Lakes of Nishina together as part of the same water system.

To the north, the Sanozaka Pass area forms a watershed between the Himekawa River system, which flows toward the Sea of Japan, and the Shinano River system. This makes the area geographically important as well as scenic.

A Lake Created by a Massive Landslide

Lake Aoki is a tectonic and landslide-formed lake associated with the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line. It is thought to have formed approximately 30,000 years ago, when a massive landslide from the western mountains blocked a valley that was once part of the Himekawa River system.

Evidence of this dramatic geological event can still be seen in the surrounding landscape. The horseshoe-shaped terrain is associated with the area where the Sanozaka Ski Resort developed, while the landslide deposits remain as the Sanozaka Hills.

The lake therefore offers more than beautiful scenery. Its landscape also provides a glimpse into the powerful geological processes that have shaped the mountains of central Japan.

Supporting Local Agriculture and Hydropower

Lake Aoki has also played an important role in the development of the surrounding region. In 1954, the Lake Aoki Comprehensive Development Project was completed, enabling the lake’s water to be used for irrigation and hydroelectric power generation.

Water from the Kashima River, a tributary of the Takase River, was routed through the Aoki Power Station and into Lake Aoki. This system helped regulate water temperature before the water was supplied to agricultural areas.

The project helped address local irrigation needs while also contributing to electricity generation, making Lake Aoki an important part of the region’s infrastructure as well as its natural environment.

Four Seasons at Lake Aoki

Spring: Cherry Blossoms and Mountain Reflections

In spring, Oyamazakura and Ezoyamazakura wild cherry trees bloom along the lakeshore. Their vivid blossoms are reflected on the clear water, creating a beautiful contrast with the snow-covered peaks of the Hakuba mountain range.

The combination of pink blossoms, blue water, and alpine scenery makes Lake Aoki a favorite destination for photographers. Calm days are particularly rewarding, when the lake surface becomes a natural mirror.

Summer: Camping, Fishing, and SUP

Summer brings lush green forests and refreshing mountain air. The lakeshore becomes a popular setting for camping, fishing, cycling, and stand-up paddleboarding.

The road around the lake is suitable for cycling, allowing visitors to explore the scenery at a relaxed pace. Early-morning SUP tours are especially popular because the water can be exceptionally calm, allowing the mountains of Hakuba to appear almost perfectly reflected on the surface.

Autumn: The Spectacle of Three-Layered Autumn Colors

In autumn, the forests surrounding Lake Aoki turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold. Trees such as Japanese oak and rowan add vivid color to the mountainsides.

Early November can offer a particularly spectacular phenomenon known as “three-layered autumn colors”: colorful autumn foliage in the forests, the tranquil lake below, and fresh snow covering the peaks of the Hakuba Three Peaks above. This dramatic combination attracts many visitors and photographers.

Winter: Migratory Birds and a Quiet Lakescape

During winter, migratory birds arrive around Lake Aoki, adding movement and life to the otherwise quiet landscape. Snow covers the surrounding mountains and forests, creating a serene atmosphere.

Nearby ski areas also attract winter sports enthusiasts, making it possible to combine skiing and snowboarding with a visit to the lake.

Outdoor Adventures Around the Lake

The peaceful atmosphere of Lake Aoki makes it an ideal destination for enjoying the outdoors at a relaxed pace. Visitors can go camping, fishing, cycling, and SUP while surrounded by forests and mountain scenery.

The road around the lake provides a scenic cycling route, while the lakeshore offers opportunities for walking and photography. The clear water and relatively quiet surroundings make the area particularly appealing to travelers who prefer nature experiences away from crowded resort areas.

A Scenic Location for Japanese Films and Television

Lake Aoki has also been used as a filming location for Japanese movies and television productions. Among the works associated with the area are “The Inugamis” and “The Wandering Moon.”

The lake’s combination of still water, mountain forests, and changing seasonal scenery provides a distinctive visual setting. Visitors interested in Japanese cinema can enjoy exploring the landscape while imagining the scenes that have been filmed here.

Nearby Ski Areas and Lake Nakatsuna

Several winter recreation areas are located around Lake Aoki, including the former Yanaba Ski Area and Sun Alpina Aoki Lake Ski Area. The surrounding mountains make the area an attractive destination for winter sports as well as summer outdoor activities.

Lake Nakatsuna, another member of the Three Lakes of Nishina, is also nearby. Combining the two lakes makes for an enjoyable sightseeing route through the northern Omachi area, where each lake offers a different landscape and atmosphere.

Easy Access to Lake Aoki

The nearest railway station is Yanaba Station on the JR Oito Line. The former Yanaba Ski Resort Front Station was discontinued in 2019, making Yanaba Station the current nearest station for Lake Aoki.

The lake is also conveniently located near National Route 148, making it accessible by car. Its location along the route through the Northern Alps makes it an easy stop for travelers exploring Omachi, Hakuba, and the Three Lakes of Nishina.

A Natural Jewel of the Northern Alps

Lake Aoki combines exceptionally clear water, dramatic mountain scenery, fascinating geological history, and a wide range of outdoor experiences. Its heart-like shape and mirror-like surface add to its visual appeal, while the surrounding forests create a peaceful atmosphere throughout the year.

Spring brings cherry blossoms, summer offers camping and water activities, autumn reveals brilliant foliage and snow-capped peaks, and winter welcomes migratory birds against a quiet snowy landscape.

Whether you come to photograph the Northern Alps, paddle across the lake at sunrise, cycle along the shore, enjoy fishing, explore filming locations, or simply relax beside the water, Lake Aoki offers an unforgettable encounter with the natural beauty of Nagano.
