Azumino Winery

Wines Born from the Natural Bounty of the Northern Alps

Azumino Winery is a winery and dairy-product producer located in the Mitsusato-Ogura area of Azumino, Nagano Prefecture. Blessed with clear mountain water, fresh air, and the beautiful landscapes of the Northern Alps, the winery creates wine and yogurt while sharing the natural character of Azumino with visitors and customers throughout Japan.

The winery was established after the facilities of the former Azumino Wine company, which went bankrupt in 2008, were taken over by Kashiyama Industries, a company known for manufacturing precision equipment. The new Azumino Winery has since developed its own approach to winemaking, emphasizing harmony between people, agriculture, and the natural environment.

Winemaking Rooted in the Local Community

One of the defining features of Azumino Winery is its close relationship with local agriculture. A large vineyard spreads directly in front of the winery, where approximately 3,000 grapevines are carefully cultivated, primarily Chardonnay and Merlot.

The grapes harvested from these vineyards are individually selected by experienced winemakers. In 2010, the winery released “Extraordinary,” a wine made using grapes grown in its own vineyard. The winery also works with contracted local growers, selecting grape varieties that are well suited to the climate of Azumino.

Azumino’s cool climate and significant difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures provide excellent conditions for growing wine grapes. The cooler nights help preserve acidity, while the warmth of the day encourages the development of aromas and concentrated fruit flavors.

This combination of climate, local grapes, and careful craftsmanship has earned recognition in wine competitions and regional wine evaluations. In 2011, four wines from the winery received certification through the sensory evaluation of Nagano Prefecture’s Appellation Control System, recognizing wines associated with the region’s distinctive character.

Discover the World of Winemaking

Azumino Winery is more than a production facility. It is also a destination where visitors can experience the atmosphere of a working winery, learn about the winemaking process, and taste products made from the region’s agricultural bounty.

Visitors can see areas associated with wine production and experience the quiet environment where wines are carefully matured. For travelers interested in Japanese wine, a visit provides an opportunity to discover how the distinctive landscape and climate of Nagano influence the character of locally produced wines.

The Wine Cellar

The winery’s semi-underground wine cellar is lined with oak barrels, filling the space with the rich aroma of aging wine. Temperature and humidity are kept relatively stable throughout the year, creating suitable conditions for slow maturation.

Visitors can tour the cellar and experience the calm atmosphere surrounding the aging wines. Guided tours are also available and provide a closer look at the winery’s production methods and philosophy.

Wine Tasting

The tasting counter offers visitors the chance to sample Azumino Winery’s wines and explore the differences between varieties and vintages. Limited-edition cellar releases and seasonal wines may be available for paid tastings, while a free tasting area also allows visitors to casually discover the winery’s products.

Tasting is an enjoyable way to compare aromas, acidity, fruit flavors, and overall character before choosing a bottle to take home. It also offers an introduction to the diversity of wine produced in Nagano, one of Japan’s important wine-producing regions.

Terrace and Café

The winery’s Wine Shop & Café includes terrace seating where visitors can relax while looking toward the majestic Northern Alps. Light meals and sweets made with local ingredients can be enjoyed while taking in the surrounding vineyards and countryside.

The atmosphere changes with the seasons. In autumn, particularly during the grape harvest, the vineyards take on golden hues, creating an especially attractive setting. Sitting on the terrace with the mountains in the distance is a simple but memorable way to experience the slower pace of rural Azumino.

Products Inspired by the Natural Environment

Azumino Winery produces more than wine. The company also develops products that make use of the region’s agricultural resources, including its popular Azumino Drinking Yogurt.

The yogurt is made from fresh milk produced by healthy cows raised on a farm surrounded by nature and views of the Northern Alps. No artificial flavorings or stabilizers are used. The milk is slowly fermented at a low temperature, resulting in a smooth, rich texture and gentle natural sweetness.

The winery also produces fruit juices using fruits grown in Shinshu, including apple juice, grape juice, and Japanese quince juice. The products are designed to preserve the natural flavors of the ingredients rather than relying on artificial flavors.

These regional products can be purchased at the winery shop, allowing visitors to take a taste of Azumino home with them. They are also available for delivery throughout Japan, making them popular souvenirs for travelers who want to enjoy the flavors of the region after their journey.

Award-Winning Wines from Nagano

The quality of Azumino Winery’s wines has been recognized through a number of awards. At the Japan Winery Award, Château Azumino Merlot 2012 received a Gold Award in 2014.

Another notable recognition came in 2019, when Takayama Village Chardonnay Barrel-Aged 2017 also received a Gold Award. These achievements reflect the combination of winemaking expertise and the distinctive climate and agricultural environment of Nagano.

A Taste of Azumino’s Landscape

A visit to Azumino Winery is an opportunity to experience more than wine. The changing appearance of the vineyards, the clear air flowing down from the mountains, and the sweeping views toward the Northern Alps create an atmosphere that feels distinctly connected to the surrounding landscape.

For travelers exploring Azumino by car, the winery makes an enjoyable stop between sightseeing destinations. Visitors can taste local wines, browse regional products, relax at the café, or simply enjoy the scenery from the terrace.

For those who prefer non-alcoholic options, the winery’s yogurt and fruit juices provide another way to discover the flavors of Shinshu. This combination makes the winery appealing not only to wine enthusiasts but also to travelers interested in local food and agricultural culture.

Wine, Agriculture, and the Spirit of Azumino

Azumino Winery represents an approach to tourism in which local agriculture, craftsmanship, and the natural environment come together. Its vineyards draw nourishment from the climate and land of Azumino, while its products reflect the skills of growers and makers who work closely with the surrounding community.

From the quiet wine cellar to the vineyard-covered landscape outside, every part of the experience offers a glimpse into the relationship between Nagano’s natural environment and its food and wine culture.

Whether you are interested in Japanese wine, local cuisine, scenic countryside, or simply looking for a peaceful place to pause during an Azumino journey, Azumino Winery offers a relaxing way to experience the region’s natural bounty and the distinctive character of wine from the Northern Alps.
