Yunohama Onsen

Yunohama Onsen is a historic seaside hot spring resort in Yunohama, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. With a history of approximately 1,000 years, the resort stretches along the coast of the Sea of Japan on the western side of the Shonai Plain.

Hotels and traditional Japanese inns line the coast, making Yunohama one of Yamagata’s best-known seaside hot spring destinations. Its greatest attraction is the combination of a white-sand beach stretching for approximately 1 kilometer and spectacular sunsets over the Sea of Japan.

The sunset viewed from Yunohama Beach has been selected as one of the “100 Best Sunsets in Japan”. Some accommodations even offer open-air baths where guests can relax in the hot spring while watching the sun slowly sink toward the horizon.

During summer, the area also becomes a popular beach resort, offering swimming and various marine activities. Yunohama therefore provides an appealing combination of hot springs, beaches, ocean scenery, and resort-style relaxation.

A Seaside Hot Spring Resort Surrounded by the Ocean and Sunset

Yunohama Onsen extends along the Sea of Japan coast in western Tsuruoka. Many accommodations are located directly along the shoreline, and guests can enjoy wide views of the Sea of Japan from their rooms and open-air baths.

At sunset, the sky and sea gradually turn shades of orange as the sun disappears beyond the horizon. Relaxing in a hot spring while enjoying this expansive coastal scenery is one of the experiences that makes Yunohama distinctive.

White-Sand Yunohama Beach and the Hot Springs

Approximately 1 kilometer of white sandy beach stretches directly in front of the hot spring resort. Because the ocean is so close, visitors can enjoy different activities depending on the season, including swimming and marine sports.

Many hotels and traditional Japanese inns offer ocean-view rooms, allowing guests to enjoy the scenery from indoors or take a leisurely walk along the shore while experiencing both the sea and hot springs.

Enjoy Hot Springs with Foot Baths and Day-Use Bathing

The Yunohama Community Center, known as “Cospa”, has a popular foot bath and a facility where visitors can drink the hot spring water. The foot bath is designed to be barrier-free, making it accessible to visitors of different ages and abilities.

Several traditional inns in the area also welcome visitors for day-use bathing, meaning that it is possible to enjoy the hot springs even without staying overnight. Exploring the area through a relaxing “hot spring tour” is a pleasant way to experience Yunohama.

The Legend of the Turtle That Discovered the Hot Spring

Yunohama Onsen has a traditional legend explaining how the hot spring was discovered. According to the story, during the Tenki era (1053–1058), people saw a turtle soaking in naturally hot water by the sea to heal an injury.

The sight is said to have led local people to discover the hot spring. Yunohama subsequently developed as a seaside hot spring destination and has attracted visitors for centuries.

The resort has long been regarded as one of the region’s famous hot springs and is traditionally counted among the “Three Pleasant Hot Spring Resorts of Oshu”, a historical designation referring to renowned hot spring destinations in the wider Tohoku region.

Clear, Colorless Chloride Hot Spring Water

The hot spring water at Yunohama Onsen is classified as a sodium-calcium chloride spring. The water is clear and colorless and is characteristic of a seaside hot spring.

Visitors can enjoy the traditional Japanese hot spring experience while looking out over the Sea of Japan. The resort also has two public bathhouses that are enjoyed by both local residents and visitors.

Hot Spring Type and Traditional Indications

Spring type: Sodium-calcium chloride spring

Traditional indications: Chronic gastrointestinal conditions, cuts, chronic skin conditions, neuralgia, burns, and certain chronic gynecological conditions.

These are traditional or officially listed indications associated with the characteristics of the spring water. Visitors with medical concerns should follow the guidance provided by each bathing facility and consult a healthcare professional when appropriate.

Taste the Seafood and Local Produce of Shonai

Yunohama Onsen is not only a destination for hot springs. It is also an excellent place to experience the rich food culture of the Shonai region.

Seasonal Flavors of Shonai

Depending on the season, meals may feature local ingredients such as bamboo shoots, dadacha edamame, melons, and kandara-jiru, a hearty soup made with winter cod that is particularly associated with the Shonai region.

Because the available ingredients change throughout the year, each season offers a different culinary experience. Enjoying fresh seasonal dishes alongside a traditional hot spring stay is one of Yunohama’s special pleasures.

Swimming and Marine Sports in Summer

Yunohama Beach, directly in front of the hot spring resort, is known for its broad sandy shoreline and relatively shallow waters. During summer, the beach becomes lively with visitors enjoying swimming and various marine activities.
