Kamo Aquarium, also known as the Jellyfish Dream館, is a seaside aquarium in Yamagata Prefecture famous for its extraordinary collection of jellyfish. It is recognized for having one of the world’s largest collections of jellyfish species, with more than 60 types on display.
The aquarium occupies a modern white building overlooking the sea. The graceful, transparent bodies of the jellyfish create an almost artistic spectacle. In the darkened exhibition spaces, jellyfish drift through deep-blue tanks illuminated with soft light, while others appear in shades of purple and green, creating the sensation of entering an otherworldly underwater universe.
Among the highlights are the enormous 5-meter-diameter jellyfish tank, fascinating educational programs, and a restaurant serving creative dishes inspired by jellyfish. The aquarium offers a memorable experience for visitors of all ages.
The Clanetarium is the heart of Kamo Aquarium’s jellyfish exhibits. Visitors can see a remarkable variety of jellyfish drifting gracefully through the water, including the mysterious creature known as Kesaran Pasaran.
The dark, atmospheric exhibition area is designed to highlight the delicate shapes and movements of the jellyfish. Their slow, almost weightless movements create a peaceful and mesmerizing experience.
The centerpiece is the Jellyfish Dream Theater, a huge circular tank measuring 5 meters in diameter. Around 10,000 moon jellyfish can be seen floating through the tank, creating an extraordinary view as their translucent bodies move gently through the water.
The aquarium also offers scheduled educational programs called “Jellyfish Stories”, where visitors can learn more about the fascinating lives and characteristics of these unusual marine creatures.
Kamo Aquarium also features a variety of marine mammals. The popular “Fin and Flipper Time” program introduces visitors to sea lions and seals while explaining their behavior and characteristics.
Another notable attraction is the northern elephant seal, a species that has been particularly rare to see in Japan. Visitors can also enjoy special seasonal activities even during winter, when some regular events are suspended.
During the winter season, the aquarium offers a “Flipper Photo” experience, giving visitors an opportunity to take commemorative photographs with sea lions and seals.
At the tide pool area, visitors can get closer to marine life and enjoy hands-on experiences with creatures found along the coast. It provides an easy and engaging way to learn about the animals that live in the shallow waters around Japan.
At the black-tailed gull feeding area, visitors can also feed the gulls while observing these familiar coastal birds up close.
The sea lion show is another popular attraction at Kamo Aquarium. The intelligent and playful sea lions perform entertaining routines, providing a lively contrast to the quiet, dreamlike atmosphere of the jellyfish exhibits.
The aquarium’s restaurant offers a selection of unusual dishes inspired by its signature animals. One of the best-known menu items is jellyfish ramen, featuring noodles made with jellyfish that have a distinctive chewy texture.
Another creative treat is jellyfish ice cream, which incorporates jellyfish pieces to add a pleasantly crunchy texture. Visitors can also find jellyfish-flavored or jellyfish-containing sweets that make unusual souvenirs.
The restaurant also serves fresh seafood from the local Shonai Coast, allowing visitors to enjoy regional flavors alongside the aquarium’s unique jellyfish cuisine.
The aquarium shop is filled with original jellyfish-themed merchandise. Visitors can find a wide range of souvenirs inspired by the aquarium’s most famous inhabitants, making it easy to take home a reminder of the dreamlike world of Kamo Aquarium.
From jellyfish-themed sweets and snacks to original goods, the shop offers plenty of choices for visitors looking for a distinctive souvenir from the Shonai region.
Kamo Aquarium offers much more than a conventional aquarium visit. Its atmospheric jellyfish galleries, enormous Jellyfish Dream Theater, marine mammal programs, hands-on exhibits, sea lion shows, and creative jellyfish cuisine create a unique experience centered around the fascinating world of marine life.
The sight of thousands of jellyfish drifting peacefully through the enormous tank is particularly memorable. Combined with the aquarium’s seaside setting and its strong connection to the local coastal culture, Kamo Aquarium is one of Yamagata’s distinctive attractions for anyone interested in marine life, photography, or unusual Japanese travel experiences.
