Yunodai Plateau

A Scenic Highland Covered in White Buckwheat Blossoms

Yunodai Plateau is a scenic highland located along National Route 458 in Okura Village, Yamagata Prefecture, just before the road reaches Hijiori Onsen. At an elevation of approximately 400 to 500 meters, the plateau is home to expansive buckwheat fields that create a beautiful landscape throughout the seasons.

From late August to mid-September, the delicate white flowers of the buckwheat bloom across the fields. In particular, around early September, the entire plateau can appear to be covered with a vast white carpet of flowers, creating an especially beautiful scene as summer gives way to autumn. The picturesque landscape also attracts many visitors who enjoy photography.

Although individual buckwheat flowers are small and delicate, their beauty becomes particularly striking when they bloom across the expansive fields all at once. Early September is generally the best time to enjoy the flowers, when the white fields contrast beautifully with the blue sky and surrounding mountains.
