The Disembarkation Point for the Mogami River Basho Line Boat Ride

One of the most important features of Kawa-no-Eki Mogamikyo Kusanagi is its role as the disembarkation point for the Mogami River Basho Line Boat Ride.

The regular boat route runs approximately 12 kilometers from Furukuchi Port in Tozawa Village, also known as the Tozawa Domain Boat Guard Station, to Kusanagi Port. The journey takes about one hour and provides spectacular views of the Mogami Gorge from the river.

In the gorge, steep mountains rise on both sides of the river, while waterfalls, unusual rock formations, rapids, and other natural features appear one after another. The boatmen’s lively commentary adds to the experience, while viewing the scenery from the surface of the river offers a perspective quite different from sightseeing on land.

Highlights of the Mogami Gorge from the River

Yanamaki Rapids

The boat passes through the Yanamaki Rapids, once regarded as one of the more difficult sections of the river. The water is said to reach a depth of approximately 15 meters, allowing passengers to experience the power of the Mogami River from the boat.

Kutsuwa Falls

Kutsuwa Falls is traditionally associated with Minamoto no Yoshitsune. According to local legend, Yoshitsune washed his horse’s bit here while fleeing toward Hiraizumi.

The waterfall is one of several locations in the Mogami Gorge connected with stories about Yoshitsune’s journey.

The “48 Waterfalls”

The Mogami Gorge contains numerous waterfalls of various sizes. Viewed from the boat, the waterfalls appear one after another among the steep cliffs and rocky walls, creating a continuously changing gorge landscape.

Shiraito Falls

One of the most impressive waterfalls is Shiraito Falls, which drops approximately 124 meters. It has been selected as one of the 100 Best Waterfalls in Japan and is one of the most recognizable sights in the Mogami Gorge.

Seen from the river, the waterfall cascading down the steep mountain slope takes on an especially impressive scale.

Boatmen’s Songs and the Scenery of the Mogami Gorge

The songs and commentary of the boatmen are an important part of the Mogami River boat ride. Among the best-known is the Mogami River Boat Song, a traditional folk song closely associated with the region.

The boatmen provide lively commentary that often incorporates local dialect. Depending on the boatman, services may also include English or Korean, helping visitors from overseas enjoy the journey as well.

Winter “Kotatsu Boats”

During winter, the Mogami River boat ride takes on a special character with the introduction of “Kotatsu Boats.”

These boats are equipped with traditional kotatsu heated tables, allowing passengers to stay warm while traveling through the snow-covered Mogami Gorge.

With white mountains surrounding the quiet river, passengers can enjoy a distinctly Japanese winter landscape while sitting comfortably around a warm kotatsu.

Listening to the boatman’s lively commentary while watching the snowy gorge from inside the warm boat offers an experience quite different from a regular-season cruise.

The Mogami Gorge Through the Four Seasons

Mogami Gorge is a dramatic valley along the middle reaches of the Mogami River, which flows from south to north through Yamagata Prefecture. The gorge extends for approximately 16 kilometers from the Furukuchi area of Tozawa Village to Kiyokawa in Shonai Town.

Mountains rise steeply along both sides of the river, creating one of the most impressive natural landscapes along the Mogami River.

Spring

In spring, mountain cherry blossoms appear among the newly green hills. The combination of snowmelt flowing through the Mogami River and the fresh colors of spring creates a refreshing landscape.

Summer

During summer, the mountains are covered in vivid green foliage. The deep greenery, blue sky, and clear flowing river create a bright and refreshing atmosphere.

Autumn

In autumn, the mountains are transformed by brilliant fall colors. The foliage reflected on the surface of the river creates a particularly beautiful scene, and viewing the autumn landscape from a boat offers a memorable perspective.

Winter

In winter, snow covers the surrounding mountains and the Mogami Gorge takes on a quiet, ink-painting-like appearance. A ride on a kotatsu boat allows visitors to appreciate the snow-covered gorge in warmth and comfort.

A Scenic Drive and River Cruise

National Route 47 runs through the Mogami Gorge area, making it possible to explore the region by car while enjoying views of the surrounding landscape.

For a closer experience of the gorge’s dramatic natural environment, however, the Mogami River boat ride offers a different perspective. Looking up from the river at steep cliffs and waterfalls provides views that cannot be experienced from the road.

A Gateway to the Nature and Culture of the Mogami River

Kawa-no-Eki Mogamikyo Kusanagi is more than the final stop on a Mogami River boat journey. It is a convenient sightseeing base where visitors can enjoy local food, shopping, art, and views of the Mogami River.

After the boat ride, visitors can enjoy dishes made with local ingredients, browse Yamagata specialties, and take in the seasonal scenery of the Mogami Gorge. During the cruise itself, the boatmen’s songs and commentary accompany views of waterfalls, rapids, cliffs, and other dramatic features of the landscape.

From mountain cherry blossoms in spring and fresh greenery in summer to colorful autumn foliage and snowy winter scenery, the Mogami Gorge offers a different atmosphere in every season. Combining a visit to Kawa-no-Eki Mogamikyo Kusanagi with a river cruise is an excellent way to experience the natural landscape and cultural traditions of the Mogami River.
