Sora Sanpo Tenryukyo: Sky Stroll Tenryu Gorge

A Walk in the Sky Above Tenryukyo Gorge

Sora Sanpo Tenryukyo is an elevated pedestrian walkway built beneath the roadway of the Tenryukyo Bridge on the San-En-Nanshin Expressway in Iida, Nagano Prefecture. The bridge is approximately 280 meters long and 80 meters high, and the walkway opened in 2019.

Located above the famous Tenryukyo Gorge, Sora Sanpo offers visitors a completely different perspective on the dramatic scenery carved by the Tenryu River. The combination of the vast gorge below and the impressive modern bridge overhead has made it a popular sightseeing spot in southern Nagano.

The Thrill of Walking High Above the Gorge

Walking along Sora Sanpo Tenryukyo feels almost like taking a stroll through the air. From the walkway beneath the bridge, visitors can look down toward the clear waters of the Tenryu River and watch sightseeing boats traveling through the gorge below.

The elevated viewpoint also offers an unusual opportunity to see trains on the JR Iida Line as they travel through the valley. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons: fresh green foliage in spring, deep greenery in summer, brilliant autumn colors, and snow-covered landscapes in winter.

Opening Hours and Access

Admission is free, making Sora Sanpo an easy addition to a sightseeing itinerary in Tenryukyo.

From April through September, the walkway is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. From October through March, it is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The walkway is closed at night for safety reasons.

The walkway is approximately a 23-minute walk from JR Tenryukyo Station and about 18 minutes on foot from the tourist facility Yottekan Tenryukyo. It is particularly convenient for drivers, as the walkway is only about a 3-minute walk from Tenryukyo Parking Area.

The Engineering Beauty of Tenryukyo Bridge

The bridge itself is an impressive example of modern engineering. The Tenryukyo Bridge is a steel through-arch bridge featuring a distinctive basket-handle-shaped arch. The roadway accommodates two lanes of traffic, while the pedestrian walkway has a comfortable effective width of approximately 2 meters.

With a total length of 280 meters, the bridge began operation on November 17, 2019, when the section between Tenryukyo Interchange and Tatsue Interchange of the San-En-Nanshin Expressway opened.

Walking beneath the bridge allows visitors to appreciate its structural design at close range while also taking in the surrounding gorge. The contrast between the bold lines of the modern bridge and the rugged natural landscape is one of the distinctive attractions of Sora Sanpo.

Where Nature and Modern Architecture Meet

Sora Sanpo Tenryukyo is a modern sightseeing destination created through the meeting of the dramatic natural landscape of the Tenryu River and contemporary engineering. The elevated walkway provides an exhilarating sense of walking in the sky while offering expansive views of the gorge from an unusual perspective.

Feel the wind flowing through the valley, look down at the river far below, and watch boats and trains moving through the landscape. Combined with the changing scenery of the four seasons and the striking structure of Tenryukyo Bridge, the experience offers a memorable way to discover one of southern Nagano’s most scenic areas.

When visiting Iida and Tenryukyo Gorge, be sure to include this unique aerial promenade in your itinerary and enjoy the remarkable scenery where nature, architecture, and engineering come together high above the river.
