Iida City

A Journey Through the Historic “Little Kyoto of Southern Nagano”

Iida City is a beautiful city in the southern part of Nagano Prefecture, in the region known as Southern Shinshu. It is the southernmost city in Nagano and has developed as the central city of the Ina Valley. Surrounded by the magnificent mountains of the Southern and Central Alps, with the Tenryu River flowing through the city, Iida is blessed with rich natural scenery.

Its location has made Iida an important center of transportation and culture since ancient times. The city also maintains strong economic connections with major cities in neighboring Aichi Prefecture. For travelers, Iida offers an appealing combination of historic streets, traditional culture, mountain landscapes, festivals, local cuisine, and warm rural hospitality.

A Castle Town Filled with History and Tradition

The center of Iida developed as the castle town of Iida Castle, which was established in the 13th century. During the Edo period, the city became the political and economic center of the Iida Domain and also flourished as a post town along the Sanshu Kaido, a historic route sometimes known as the “Salt Road.”

Traces of its castle-town heritage can still be found throughout the city. Historic streets, traditional events, and long-established local customs offer visitors a glimpse into the character of Iida as it developed over the centuries.

Iida is also nationally known as the “City of Puppetry.” Every August, the Iida Puppet Festa brings together many puppet theaters and performers from Japan and abroad. The city is also famous for its apple-lined street and vibrant local performing arts, giving Iida a distinctive atmosphere that feels both cultural and welcoming.

Mountain Scenery and the Rich Landscapes of the Ina Valley

Iida is surrounded by several protected natural areas, including Minami Alps National Park, Central Alps Quasi-National Park, and Tenryu-Okumikawa Quasi-National Park. From the city and surrounding areas, visitors can see mountains reaching approximately 3,000 meters in elevation.

Among the region’s notable peaks are Mount Hijiri, at 3,013 meters, and Mount Tekari, at 2,591 meters. Other mountains, including Mount Kazakoshi, Mount Ikenokuchidake, and Mount Chausudake, attract hikers and mountaineers throughout the year.

The Tenryu River is the major waterway of the Ina Valley, joined by rivers such as the Achi, Toyama, and Kamimura Rivers. Their clear waters have supported both nature and human settlement. Historically, these rivers were also important for transportation and the development of industries using water power.

A Climate Blessed by Four Distinct Seasons

Iida has a climate influenced by both the inland climate of the Central Highlands and the Pacific side of Japan. Compared with many other parts of Nagano Prefecture, the city has relatively mild weather and is generally comfortable for sightseeing.

Winters tend to be comparatively moderate, and days when temperatures remain below freezing throughout the day are uncommon. The region also enjoys many clear days. Summers can be hot, with occasional extremely hot days, but mornings and evenings are often cooler, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural rhythm of the mountain valley.

A City of Art, Culture, and Learning

Iida has a number of cultural institutions where visitors can discover the region’s artistic and intellectual heritage.

Iida City Museum combines art, history, and natural science, offering exhibitions that introduce the cultural and natural character of the region. The Kihachiro Kawamoto Puppet Museum focuses on the work of puppet artist Kihachiro Kawamoto, who became widely known for the NHK puppet television series “Romance of the Three Kingdoms.”

The Takeda Sennosuke Memorial International Marionette Museum displays marionettes from around the world and promotes international exchange through puppet theater. Together, these institutions help explain why Iida has become one of Japan’s most important centers for puppetry.

Exploring Iida’s Natural Attractions

Iida offers numerous opportunities to experience the changing beauty of nature throughout the seasons. One of the most famous destinations is Tenryukyo Gorge, a spectacular gorge carved by the Tenryu River over a long period of geological time. Steep cliffs and lush vegetation create dramatic scenery along the river.

Visitors can experience the gorge from the water on the Tenryu River Boat Ride or the Tenryu Line River Cruise. These boat trips bring travelers close to the cliffs and forests, offering a memorable perspective on the surrounding landscape.

Another highlight is Sora Sanpo Tenryukyo, a pedestrian walkway on Tenryukyo Bridge. Walking above the gorge provides an exhilarating, almost airborne perspective, together with impressive views of the river and mountains below.

Further into the mountains are Shirabiso Highland, the remote settlement of Shimo-kuri, often called the “Japanese Tyrol,” and the Oikeyama Crater, which preserves evidence of a geological event from Earth’s distant past. These destinations reveal the remarkable diversity of the landscapes around Iida.

Traditional Festivals That Bring the Community Together

Iida hosts numerous traditional festivals and cultural events throughout the year. One of the most famous is the Tohyama Shimotsuki Festival, a winter ritual designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.

Held every December, the festival preserves ancient ceremonies of gratitude and prayer to the gods. Rituals involving sacred dances and purification reflect the distinctive spiritual traditions of the mountain communities of Southern Shinshu.

Other major events include the Oneri Festival, Tokimata Hatsuma Hadaka Festival, and Iida Ringon. These lively celebrations bring local residents together and offer visitors an opportunity to experience community traditions that remain an important part of everyday life.

Local Food and Traditional Industries

Iida is a major agricultural area and is particularly famous for Shinshu apples. Varieties such as Shinano Sweet and Shinano Gold are popular throughout Japan. In autumn, visitors can enjoy apple-picking at orchards around the city, making the harvest season an especially enjoyable time to visit.

Other local specialties include Akaishi tea and sake produced by the local brewery Kikusui Shuzo. These products reflect the region’s agricultural traditions and the clean water of the Southern Alps.

Iida’s distinctive local cuisine includes Iida-style yakiniku, otaguri—a traditional dish of simmered horse offal—and gohei-mochi, grilled rice cakes coated with a savory-sweet sauce. These dishes offer a taste of the food culture unique to the Ina Valley.

Traditional crafts are another part of Iida’s cultural heritage. Iida mizuhiki, decorative cords traditionally used for gifts and ceremonial occasions, and Obayashi-yaki pottery are among the crafts that continue to represent the region’s identity.

A Southern Shinshu City Where Past and Present Meet

Iida City is a place where mountains, rivers, history, traditional culture, and local hospitality come together. Its origins as a castle town and post town remain visible in its historic landscape, while its puppet theater, festivals, traditional crafts, and agricultural products continue to give the city a vibrant contemporary identity.

From the dramatic scenery of Tenryukyo Gorge to the peaceful mountain settlements of Southern Shinshu, Iida offers many different ways to experience the region. Visitors can explore historic streets in the morning, discover traditional performing arts in a museum, enjoy local cuisine for lunch, and then head into the mountains for spectacular scenery.

With its rich natural environment, relatively mild climate, distinctive food culture, and deeply rooted traditions, Iida provides an authentic introduction to Southern Nagano. Each season brings a different atmosphere, making the city a destination where travelers can discover something new with every visit.
