Roadside Station Shinanoji Shimojo “Soba no Shiro” is a popular roadside destination in Shimojo Village, Shimoina District, Nagano Prefecture. Located along National Route 151, it serves as a convenient base for exploring southern Nagano and offers travelers an enjoyable combination of local food, shopping, hands-on experiences, nature, and history.
The facility has a distinctive castle-like appearance inspired by the former Yoshioka Castle’s second bailey. Inside, visitors can discover the flavors and traditions of Shinshu while enjoying the warm hospitality of the local community.
The heart of the facility is Soba no Shiro, where freshly made soba produced in the facility’s own workshop can be enjoyed.
One popular specialty is oroshi soba, served with locally grown Oyoda spicy daikon, a distinctive variety of Japanese radish from Shimojo Village. The sharp, refreshing flavor of the daikon pairs beautifully with the delicate taste of Shinshu soba.
For those who want to enjoy as much as possible, an all-you-can-eat soba meal is available for ¥2,000. Fresh soba is also sold as a souvenir, allowing visitors to take a taste of southern Nagano home with them.
At the Soba Making Experience Workshop, visitors can learn the traditional process of making Japanese buckwheat noodles. Participants knead, roll, and cut the dough themselves, creating approximately one to two servings of soba.
The experience takes around 40 minutes, after which participants can enjoy the soba they have made with their own hands. It is a memorable way to experience one of the most important food traditions of Nagano and is especially popular with families and travelers looking for an interactive cultural experience.
Advance reservations are required.
The adjoining Umaimono-kan offers a wide selection of local specialties from southern Nagano. Among its popular products are Soba Manju and Yomogi Musume, sweets developed by local women, as well as seasonal vegetables and fruits, handmade konnyaku, and pickled shimauri melons.
The selection changes with the seasons, making the shop an interesting place to visit throughout the year. In spring, for example, visitors may find seasonal treats such as chiffon cakes decorated with cherry blossoms and special versions of Soba Manju.
These local products offer an easy way to discover the everyday flavors of the mountain communities of southern Nagano and to take a little of the region home as a souvenir.
Another popular attraction is Milk Farm Yuboku-kan, a dairy facility operated directly by a local farm. Its products are made with milk from Brown Swiss cattle raised in the natural surroundings of Shimojo Village.
The rich drinkable yogurt and creamy ice cream are especially popular. After a drive through the mountains, these fresh dairy products provide a gentle and refreshing treat made from the high-quality milk of locally raised cows.
Just a short distance from the roadside station is Cosmos no Yu, a day-use bathing facility featuring natural hot spring water.
One of its greatest attractions is the expansive view. From the baths, visitors can look across the Central Alps, Southern Alps, and Ina Valley, creating a memorable setting for relaxing after a day of sightseeing.
The combination of hot spring bathing and mountain scenery captures the peaceful character of Shimojo Village and makes Cosmos no Yu an ideal place to end a journey through the area.
The castle-like design of Soba no Shiro is inspired by Yoshioka Castle, which was built during the Muromachi period by Shimojo Yasuuji. The castle was a fortified mountain stronghold that made effective use of the area’s natural terrain.
Today, the former castle site has been developed as Yoshioka Castle Ruins Park. In spring, the grounds become a popular cherry blossom viewing spot, while the park’s playground equipment, gazebo, and restrooms make it a pleasant destination for families.
A visit to the park adds a historical dimension to a stop at the roadside station, allowing travelers to combine local cuisine with the story of the medieval mountain stronghold that inspired the building’s distinctive design.
