Silk Chiffon Cake

A Light and Delicate Chiffon Cake Made with Silk from Tomioka

Silk Chiffon Cake is a unique sweet made by carefully baking chiffon cake batter blended with silk protein liquid extracted from cocoons produced in Tomioka, Gunma Prefecture. The addition of silk protein gives the cake a moist softness and a light, fluffy texture.

The cake was named “Silk Chiffon Cake” because its fine, smooth, and delicate texture is reminiscent of silk fabric. The name is more than a reference to its texture—the cake actually contains ingredients derived from silk.

Silk Protein Made from Silkworm Cocoons

The cake does not contain whole silkworm cocoons. Instead, silk protein liquid extracted from the cocoons with the cooperation of Tokyo University of Agriculture is incorporated into the cake batter.

Silk protein itself is described as a pure protein with no distinct taste or odor. When added to food, it is said to enhance the natural flavors of ingredients such as wheat and eggs while also contributing to the texture of the finished product.

A Moist, Fluffy, and Delicately Light Texture

One of the main attractions of Silk Chiffon Cake is its soft and airy texture, often described in Japanese as “fuafua,” meaning exceptionally fluffy and light. The fine-textured cake has a smooth mouthfeel, combining the characteristic lightness of chiffon cake with a rich overall flavor.

Its delicate texture, reminiscent of silk, gives this specialty a distinctive character that sets it apart from ordinary chiffon cakes.

A Sweet Born from Tomioka’s Silk-Raising Heritage

The cake reflects the long history of sericulture and silk production in Tomioka. With the World Heritage designation of the Tomioka Silk Mill, the region continues to preserve the history of the silk industry that played an important role in Japan’s modernization.

At the same time, Japan’s sericulture industry has faced various challenges, including competition from imported products and a shortage of people to carry on the industry. Silk Chiffon Cake was developed as part of the “Tomioka Silk Project,” an initiative aimed at supporting and revitalizing the region’s sericulture industry.

Made Exclusively with Cocoons from Tomioka

The cocoons used as the raw material are sourced exclusively from Tomioka. By transforming locally produced cocoons into a modern sweet, the cake provides a unique and approachable way to experience Tomioka’s silk culture.

A Unique Sweet That Lets You Taste Tomioka’s History

Silk Chiffon Cake is a distinctive sweet made with silk protein derived from cocoons produced in Tomioka, creating a soft, delicate texture inspired by the qualities of silk.

Rather than simply visiting industrial heritage sites such as the Tomioka Silk Mill, visitors can also experience Tomioka’s sericulture culture through food. When visiting the area, enjoy this light and silky chiffon cake while reflecting on the history of silk production that helped shape modern Japan.
