Kanra Furusato-kan (Kanra Hometown Museum)

An Interactive Rural Retreat Surrounded by Nature

Kanra Furusato-kan is an experiential accommodation and community facility located next to Kanra General Park in Obata, Kanra Town, Gunma Prefecture. Surrounded by lush greenery, it offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy the changing scenery of the seasons while experiencing local cuisine, rural activities, and hot spring bathing.

Experience Local Cuisine and Nature

Throughout the year, visitors can enjoy a variety of hands-on traditional cooking experiences using locally produced ingredients from Kanra Town. Activities include making soba, udon, and konnyaku, as well as preparing okkirikomi, a traditional Gunma noodle dish. The dishes prepared by participants can be enjoyed on-site or taken home.

Another popular activity is trout catching in the stream running through the grounds. Both children and adults can enjoy trying to catch the fish, and freshly caught trout grilled over charcoal with salt has a wonderfully rustic flavor. Seasonal agricultural experiences, such as apple picking and sweet potato harvesting, are also available.

Enjoy Local Flavors

The on-site restaurant serves seasonal dishes prepared with local ingredients. One of its specialties is the kiji dango set meal, developed as part of efforts to revive this traditional dish. It uses fresh pheasant meat sourced from Kihoku Town in Ehime Prefecture and is served in various forms, including hot pot, croquettes, and mixed rice. Advance reservations are required.

Other menu options include tempura set meals, soba set meals, cold zaru soba, and mountain vegetable soba, making the restaurant a convenient place to enjoy lunch while sightseeing in the area.

Barbecue Without the Hassle

The covered outdoor barbecue garden offers a hands-free barbecue experience with advance reservations. Guests can enjoy a lively meal in an open-air setting without having to bring their own equipment or charcoal. The barbecue uses homemade charcoal produced at the charcoal-burning hut on the premises.

Packages that include bathing are also available, making the facility particularly suitable for groups, family outings, and gatherings with friends.

Relax at Seseragi-no-Yu

The facility features Seseragi-no-Yu, an artificial hot spring containing calcium carbonate. It is available for both day visitors and overnight guests.

Taking a relaxing bath after sports, outdoor activities, or cooking experiences is a wonderful way to refresh both body and mind.

Stay in Comfort

Kanra Furusato-kan offers 15 Japanese-style rooms and three Western-style rooms. All guest rooms are equipped with televisions, heating and air conditioning, and private toilets for a comfortable stay.

The facility also has training rooms and banquet halls, making it suitable for a wide range of purposes, including group trips, training camps, reunions, and year-end gatherings. Staying here offers an opportunity to slow down, enjoy the surrounding nature, and experience the warmth of rural Kanra.

Getting There

By train, take the Joshin Electric Railway from Takasaki Station to Joshu-Fukushima Station, a journey of approximately 30 minutes. From the station, Kanra Furusato-kan is about 10 minutes by shuttle vehicle or taxi.

By car, the facility is approximately 10 minutes from the Tomioka Interchange on the Joshin-Etsu Expressway, making it easily accessible by road.
