Shiroishigawa Sen-o Park

A Spectacular View of Thousands of Cherry Blossoms

Shiroishigawa Sen-o Park is a scenic flower park in Shibata Town, Miyagi Prefecture. Located beside the Shiroishi River, the park offers beautiful views of the river, seasonal flowers, and the majestic Zao Mountains in the background.

The park was completed in March 2017 and is located next to Funaoka Castle Ruins Park, another famous flower-viewing destination in the area. Together, these parks form an attractive sightseeing area, especially during the spring cherry blossom season.

The main attraction is the famous Shiroishigawa Embankment Hitome Senbonzakura, or “One View, a Thousand Cherry Trees.” In addition to cherry blossoms, visitors can enjoy seasonal flowers such as flowering peaches, forsythia, dogtooth violets, hydrangeas, and red spider lilies.

A Spectacular View of Cherry Blossoms and the Zao Mountains

The greatest attraction of Shiroishigawa Sen-o Park is the beautiful contrast between the cherry trees along the Shiroishi River and the Zao mountain range.

In spring, the famous rows of cherry trees create a spectacular landscape around the park. On clear days, visitors can see the pink and white blossoms beneath a blue sky, with the magnificent Zao Mountains rising in the distance.

This combination of river, cherry blossoms, and mountains makes the park an excellent destination for landscape photography. The scenery is particularly impressive when the mountains are clearly visible behind the flowering trees.

Shibata Sen-o Bridge

One of the symbols of the area is the Shibata Sen-o Bridge, a pedestrian bridge connecting Funaoka Castle Ruins Park with the cherry trees along the Shiroishi River.

Completed in 2015, the bridge is approximately 87 meters long and 12 meters high. Its name expresses two ideas: connecting the “thousand cherry trees” of Funaoka Castle Ruins Park with the “one-view thousand cherry trees” along the Shiroishi River, and the wish that cherry blossoms will continue to bloom for a thousand years into the future.

Cherry Blossom Views from the Bridge

One of the most distinctive features of the Shibata Sen-o Bridge is that visitors can view the cherry blossoms from almost the same height as the tree canopies.

Looking across the bridge, visitors can see the rows of cherry trees stretching along the river. During the flowering season, the view becomes particularly spectacular, with the blossoms appearing almost at eye level.

The bridge is also a popular photography location because trains traveling along the nearby railway line can sometimes be photographed together with the cherry blossoms. This combination of flowers, railway scenery, river, and mountains creates a memorable image of spring in Miyagi.

Shiroishigawa Embankment Hitome Senbonzakura

The most famous attraction in the area is the Shiroishigawa Embankment Hitome Senbonzakura. Approximately 8 kilometers of cherry trees line the Shiroishi River, stretching from the Kanegase area upstream to the Funaoka area of Shibata Town.

Most of the trees are Somei Yoshino cherry trees, whose branches form an impressive tunnel of blossoms in spring. The long line of flowering trees along the river is regarded as one of Japan’s notable cherry blossom destinations and attracts visitors from across the country.

The Meaning Behind “Hitome Senbonzakura”

The Japanese name Hitome Senbonzakura can be translated as “one glance, a thousand cherry trees.” The name is said to have been given in 1953 at a meeting of the Ogata Town Promotion Association because so many cherry trees could be seen at once from a single viewpoint.

The expression was also inspired by the famous cherry blossoms of Mount Yoshino in Nara Prefecture, which have long been associated with the phrase “Hitome Senbon.” The name has since become widely recognized as a symbol of this scenic area.

How the Cherry Tree Landscape Began

The origins of the famous cherry tree-lined embankment can be traced to Kaijiro Takayama, a businessman from Ogawara Town.

Takayama donated and planted approximately 700 cherry trees in 1923 and another 500 trees in 1927 along the Shiroishi River embankment. The trees were subsequently cared for and protected by local residents.

Today, approximately 1,200 cherry trees line the embankment, creating the spectacular spring landscape for which the area is known.

Cherry Blossom Varieties

Most of the trees along the Shiroishigawa Embankment are Somei Yoshino, one of the most widely planted cherry varieties in Japan. However, visitors can also see other varieties that extend the blossom season.

Shiroyamazakura and Yaezakura

Shiroyamazakura and Yaezakura bloom approximately one to two weeks later than Somei Yoshino. Their later flowering allows visitors to enjoy cherry blossom scenery for a longer period.

More recently, additional varieties have been planted, including the rare Sendai Yoshino, a locally developed variety, as well as weeping cherry trees and Hikanzakura, or Taiwan cherry.

The variety of cherry trees means that the landscape does not remain exactly the same throughout the flowering season. Different varieties gradually come into bloom, creating changing colors and shapes along the river.

Seasonal Flowers Beyond the Cherry Blossoms

Although the area is particularly famous for its spring cherry blossoms, Shiroishigawa Sen-o Park is not limited to one season.

Flowering peaches and forsythia add bright colors in spring, while dogtooth violets can be enjoyed as another seasonal highlight. Later in the year, hydrangeas and red spider lilies provide additional color.

In autumn, the changing foliage creates a different atmosphere, allowing visitors to enjoy the combination of flowers, trees, river scenery, and mountains beyond the peak cherry blossom period.

Best Time to Visit

The busiest time at Shiroishigawa Sen-o Park and the surrounding attractions is the spring cherry blossom season. The Shiroishigawa Embankment, Shibata Sen-o Bridge, and Funaoka Castle Ruins Park become especially lively as the trees reach full bloom.

The exact flowering period varies from year to year depending on weather conditions. Visitors planning a trip specifically for the cherry blossoms should check the latest flowering forecasts and local sightseeing information before traveling.

Access to Shiroishigawa Sen-o Park

By Train

The park and the Shiroishigawa cherry blossom area are within walking distance of Funaoka Station and Ogawara Station on the JR Tohoku Main Line.

Traveling by train is particularly convenient during the cherry blossom season, when roads and parking areas can become crowded.

By Car

The area can also be reached by car from the Shiroishi Interchange or Murata Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway.

Parking areas are available around the sightseeing area, but they can become very busy during the peak cherry blossom season. For this reason, public transportation is recommended when visiting during the busiest periods.

A Classic Spring Landscape in Miyagi

Shiroishigawa Sen-o Park is a scenic destination where visitors can experience one of Miyagi Prefecture’s most memorable spring landscapes. The combination of the Shiroishigawa Embankment Hitome Senbonzakura, the Shibata Sen-o Bridge, the Shiroishi River, and the Zao Mountains creates a distinctive panorama that is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season.

The story behind the approximately 1,200 cherry trees also adds depth to the experience. What began with donations and plantings by Kaijiro Takayama in the early 20th century has been carefully maintained by local communities and has grown into a celebrated cherry blossom landscape.

With its famous cherry trees, seasonal flowers, mountain views, railway scenery, and easy access by train, the area is an excellent destination for travelers who want to experience the beauty of spring in rural Miyagi. A walk across the Shibata Sen-o Bridge and along the Shiroishi River is particularly rewarding for visitors looking for memorable views and photographs.
