Sankai Waterfall

A Spectacular Three-Tiered Cascade in Zao

Sankai Waterfall, also known as Sankai-no-Taki, is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the Tohoku region. Located in Zao Town, Katta District, Miyagi Prefecture, this beautiful three-tiered waterfall has been selected as one of the 100 Best Waterfalls in Japan.

The waterfall is formed where the Ishikozawa River, flowing down the northern slope of Mt. Ushiro-eboshidake in the Zao mountain range, plunges into the Sumikawa River. The waterfall extends from an elevation of approximately 572 to 700 meters.

Sankai Waterfall has a total drop of approximately 181 meters and is about 7 meters wide. Its plunge pool is approximately 12 meters in diameter. The water falls dramatically through three distinct stages, creating an impressive combination of power and elegance.

The Three-Tiered Form and the Origin of Its Name

The waterfall consists of three successive drops, arranged one above another. The three levels resemble the floors of a three-story building, which is said to be the reason for the name “Sankai,” meaning “three floors”.

Clear mountain water passes through the surrounding primeval forests of beech and katsura trees, creating clouds of white spray as it descends the rocky slopes.

The appearance of the waterfall changes throughout the year. Fresh greenery, summer foliage, autumn colors, and winter snow each create a different atmosphere, making the waterfall an appealing destination for nature lovers and photographers.

A Spectacular Autumn Foliage Destination

Autumn is particularly popular at Sankai Waterfall. As the surrounding mountains are covered in vivid shades of red, orange, and yellow, the brilliant white stream of the waterfall stands out dramatically against the colorful forest.

The contrast between the flowing water and autumn foliage creates scenery that looks almost like a traditional Japanese landscape painting. During the fall season, many photographers and sightseers visit the area to enjoy and capture this spectacular view.

Zao Echo Line and the Takimidai Viewpoint

Sankai Waterfall is located along the scenic mountain road known as the Zao Echo Line. The road passes through the Zao mountain landscape and offers changing scenery throughout the year.

In spring, visitors can see fresh green foliage emerging after the snow melts. Summer brings deep green forests, while autumn transforms the mountains with colorful leaves. In winter, the area is famous for its snow-covered scenery and the snow monsters, or juhyō, found in the higher parts of the Zao mountains.

Viewing Sankai Waterfall from Takimidai

One of the best places to view Sankai Waterfall is Takimidai, a designated observation point along the Zao Echo Line.

The viewpoint is located across the Sumikawa River from the waterfalls and offers a panoramic view of Sankai Waterfall in the distance and Fudō Waterfall in the foreground. Seeing the two waterfalls together creates a particularly impressive mountain landscape.

Because the Zao Echo Line is closed during winter due to heavy snowfall, access to Takimidai is also restricted during this period.

Fudō Waterfall

Fudō Waterfall is another major attraction visible from Takimidai. Located in the Zao mountains, it is one of the largest waterfalls in the area, measuring approximately 54 meters in height and 16 meters in width. Its plunge pool is approximately 32 meters in diameter.

With abundant water flowing through the deep mountain valley, Fudō Waterfall has a powerful and solemn appearance. The dramatic scenery of the waterfall and surrounding forest has also attracted artists and writers over the years.

The Natural Beauty of Sumikawa Gorge

Sankai Waterfall and Fudō Waterfall are two of the most famous waterfalls in the Sumikawa Gorge. Other waterfalls, including Jizō Waterfall, can also be found throughout the surrounding mountain landscape.

The clear waters of the Sumikawa River flow through the valley, creating a cool and refreshing environment even during summer. The combination of flowing water, forests, cliffs, and mountain air gives the area a peaceful atmosphere.

Every season offers a different experience: spring brings new leaves, summer deep green forests, autumn colorful foliage, and winter snow-covered landscapes. Returning at a different time of year can reveal an entirely new side of the gorge.

Enjoying Sankai Waterfall Throughout the Seasons

Spring to Early Summer

During spring, melting snow increases the amount of water flowing through the mountains. As a result, the waterfall can appear particularly powerful.

The surrounding forests also begin to develop fresh green foliage, while the cool mountain air makes this an invigorating time to visit.

Summer

Summer brings lush greenery to the Zao mountains. The cool air around the gorge provides a pleasant escape from the heat of the lowlands.

On clear days, the contrast between the blue sky, green mountains, and white waterfall is especially beautiful. The surrounding area is also suitable for enjoying a mountain walk and the natural scenery.

Autumn

Autumn is the most popular season for visiting Sankai Waterfall. The mountains surrounding the waterfall become covered in brilliant foliage, creating a spectacular combination of red and golden leaves with the white waterfall.

This is also the season when many visitors and photographers come to enjoy the scenery from Takimidai.

Winter

During winter, the Zao Echo Line is closed because of heavy snow, making direct access to the waterfall and Takimidai unavailable.

Although visitors cannot normally approach the viewpoint during this period, the snow-covered mountains create a quiet and beautiful winter landscape. The Zao area is also well known for its spectacular winter scenery.

How to Get to Sankai Waterfall

By Public Transportation

From Shiroishi-Zao Station on the JR Tohoku Shinkansen, visitors can take a Miyagi Transportation bus and get off at the Takimidai bus stop. From there, the observation point can be reached on foot.

By Car

Visitors traveling by car can use the Zao Echo Line and park at the Takimidai parking area.

However, the mountain road is closed during winter because of snow. For this reason, visits to Takimidai and the waterfall viewpoint are generally recommended from spring through autumn.

Visitor Safety

The waterfall and viewpoint are located in a relatively high mountain environment, where weather conditions can change quickly. Even during warmer months, temperatures can be cooler than in the surrounding cities.

Visitors should bring appropriate outerwear and wear comfortable, sturdy shoes suitable for walking. Before setting out, it is also important to check road and access conditions, particularly during the mountain’s transitional seasons.

Experience the Power of Zao’s Mountain Landscape

Sankai Waterfall is a spectacular natural attraction where water, forest, and mountains come together. Its impressive 181-meter total drop and three-tiered structure make it one of the highlights of the Zao area.

The waterfall is especially beautiful when viewed from Takimidai, where it can be seen together with Fudō Waterfall across the Sumikawa Gorge. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons, from fresh spring greenery and cool summer forests to brilliant autumn foliage and peaceful winter snow.

For travelers exploring Miyagi Prefecture and the Zao mountains, Sankai Waterfall offers an opportunity to experience the dramatic natural beauty of Tohoku while enjoying one of Japan’s notable waterfalls.
