Kamagataki Falls

A Hidden Natural Retreat in Gifu with Spectacular Waterfalls and Nagashi Somen

Kamagataki Falls is a beautiful natural attraction surrounded by lush greenery in Minami Town, Gujo City, Gifu Prefecture. Its dramatic series of three waterfalls creates an impressive landscape that captivates visitors. The name “Kamagataki” is associated with the distinctive rock formations around the second waterfall, where the rock basin resembles a giant traditional cooking pot.

Discover the Three Waterfalls of Kamagataki

Kamagataki consists of three waterfalls known as Ichi-no-taki (First Waterfall), Ni-no-taki (Second Waterfall), and San-no-taki (Third Waterfall). Together, they form a striking sequence of cascading water flowing through a rugged, forested valley.

The second waterfall is particularly distinctive. Its enormous rock formation resembles a traditional iron cooking pot, or kama, which is said to have inspired the name of the waterfall. The powerful flow of water and the surrounding natural scenery make Kamagataki an appealing destination for visitors seeking a closer connection with nature.

Enjoy Local Flavors at Taki Chaya

Located near Kamagataki Falls, Taki Chaya is a rustic teahouse surrounded by the sounds of the waterfall and a gently flowing mountain stream. Its natural setting allows visitors to enjoy a meal while taking in the peaceful atmosphere of the valley.

During summer, the teahouse is especially popular for nagashi somen, a traditional Japanese dining experience in which thin noodles are sent flowing through a stream of water in a bamboo channel and caught with chopsticks. Barbecue facilities are also available by reservation, and guests may bring their own ingredients.

In winter, the menu includes warm nyumen, a comforting dish of thin somen noodles served in hot broth. These seasonal offerings make Taki Chaya an enjoyable stop at different times of the year.

After eating, visitors can head toward Kamagataki Falls via the path behind the teahouse. Seeing and hearing the rushing water up close offers an experience that photographs alone cannot fully capture.

Kamagataki Masu-en: Fishing and Freshwater Fish

Kamagataki Masu-en is a fishing pond located close to the waterfalls. Visitors can enjoy fishing for amago trout and iwana char, which are carefully raised in the clear waters of Minami.

Fish caught at the pond can be prepared on-site, including salt-grilled fish and deep-fried dishes, allowing visitors to enjoy their catch fresh. The facility also offers bait fishing for trout, making it a fun activity for both children and adults.

In summer, visitors can also enjoy nagashi somen at Masu-en. Light meals featuring keichan, a regional dish of seasoned chicken and vegetables associated with Gifu, are available as well.

Whether you want to admire the waterfalls, enjoy a traditional Japanese noodle experience, or try fishing in clear mountain water, Kamagataki offers a memorable opportunity to experience the natural beauty and local food culture of Gifu.
