Ichihara History Museum (I’Museum Center)

Discovering the History and Culture of Ichihara

Ichihara History Museum, also known as the I’Museum Center, is a history museum in Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture. The museum introduces the history and culture of Ichihara through archaeological materials, historical documents, everyday objects, and interactive exhibits.

The museum was newly opened on November 20, 2022, following the expansion and renovation of the former Ichihara City Center for Archaeological Investigation, which had been established in 1988. In addition to the main museum, the facility includes spaces where visitors can experience aspects of history in a more hands-on way.

The I’Museum Project

The Ichihara History Museum serves as the central base of the “I’Museum” project, which views the entire city of Ichihara as one large museum.

The project aims to preserve and develop the city’s historical and cultural heritage together with local residents and pass it on to future generations. Particular attention is given to the relationship between Tokyo Bay, the Yoro River, the local landscape, and the people who have lived in Ichihara throughout history.

Exhibition Concept and Design

The museum’s exhibition concept is “A Journey through the History of Ichihara Woven by Tokyo Bay and the Yoro River.” Visitors are encouraged to explore the region’s history as if following a journey through the landscape and communities of Ichihara.

The Yoro River, one of Ichihara’s symbolic natural features, is used as the main design motif. Like the flow of a river, the exhibits are arranged to create a sense of continuity, connecting different periods and aspects of local history.

Themes of the Permanent Exhibition

The permanent exhibition includes a display of the famous “Ō Choku” inscribed iron sword, along with six major themes. Exhibits are periodically changed and updated.

Hands-On Exhibits

The museum also offers hands-on exhibits developed in cooperation with Chiba University. Visitors can actually touch selected materials and objects, providing a more direct way to learn about Ichihara’s history and archaeological heritage.

History of the Museum

The present Ichihara History Museum developed from the Ichihara City Center for Archaeological Investigation, which was constructed in 1988.

The facility was expanded and renovated in 2022 and reopened as the Ichihara History Museum. While preserving the functions and heritage of the former facility, the redevelopment created larger exhibition areas and new spaces for interactive historical experiences.

The nearby archaeological site makes the area particularly interesting for visitors wishing to understand the relationship between the museum’s exhibits and the actual landscapes and burial sites where important artifacts were discovered.

Nearby Attractions and Facilities
