Chiba Kodomo no Kuni Kidsdom is a nature-filled amusement and recreation park for children and families, located beside Lake Yamakura in Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture. The park is recognized as one of the 500 Selected Attractions of Boso and offers a wide variety of playgrounds, attractions, and hands-on activities.
Surrounded by water and greenery, the park provides an open and relaxing environment where children can enjoy outdoor activities while families spend quality time together. Facilities include a pool, fishing pond, cycling course, and go-kart track, along with many other attractions.
The park originally opened on May 1, 1971, under the name Chiba Kodomo no Kuni, meaning “Children’s Country.” It featured a variety of facilities, including go-karts, indoor and outdoor roller-skating areas, cycling facilities, a fishing pond, a barbecue area, and a miniature railway known as the Kodomo no Kuni Railway.
However, following the dissolution of the Chiba Welfare and Friendship Foundation, the park temporarily closed on September 30, 2006.
It reopened in 2007 under the management of Chiba Prefecture Recreation City Development Co., Ltd. and began a new chapter as Chiba Kodomo no Kuni Kidsdom.
The official mascot of Chiba Kodomo no Kuni Kidsdom is Chippa-kun. With his friendly and adorable appearance, he is especially popular with young visitors and has become one of the recognizable symbols of the park.
The Chippa-kun Clock Tower is a fun mechanical clock tower that comes to life with music and moving features. At certain times, the castle structure rises and lights up, creating an entertaining show that attracts the attention of children.
Many areas of the park can be enjoyed free of charge. These include a spacious grassy field, the indoor play area known as Asobing Village, slides, and a pool.
The combination of indoor and outdoor facilities means that children of different ages can find something enjoyable to do, while parents can choose activities according to the weather and their children’s interests.
The park also offers numerous paid attractions for visitors looking for more excitement. Popular choices include go-karts, Dum Dum Ball, and the Kidsdom Train.
The go-kart course is one of the park’s most popular attractions. The approximately 1.5-kilometer forest course is among the longer go-kart courses in Japan, allowing riders to enjoy a thrilling drive through a green natural setting.
Children in fourth grade of elementary school or older can drive a kart by themselves after completing the required instruction. It is an exciting opportunity for children to experience the fun of driving in a controlled recreational environment.
Dum Dum Ball is a playful area filled with balls of different sizes. The floor is covered with soft urethane material, providing a safer environment for active play.
Features such as spiral slopes and holes in the floor add variety to the space, encouraging children to climb, move, explore, and play freely.
The Forest Athletic Zone is a free outdoor athletic area where children can enjoy physical activities surrounded by trees and greenery.
Attractions include a Tarzan rope, swings, and slides. Children can run around and exercise while enjoying the natural surroundings, making this one of the park’s particularly popular free-play areas.
When the weather is rainy or temperatures become too hot, Asobing Village provides a convenient indoor alternative. The facility includes a picture-book library, a ball pool, and a large spiral slide.
Because it is indoors, children can continue playing regardless of the weather, making it especially useful for families planning a full-day visit.
Other attractions include Wakuwaku Cycling, where up to four family members can ride together, a roller-skating rink, a giant maze, and the seasonal Jabujabu Pool, which operates during the summer.
Families can also simply relax on the large grassy field. With attractions ranging from active rides to quiet outdoor recreation, the park offers enough variety for children and adults to spend an entire day enjoying the surroundings.
Chiba Kodomo no Kuni Kidsdom is also home to a cultural facility featuring the Yamakura Shell Mound, an archaeological site dating from the middle of the Jomon period of prehistoric Japan.
Exhibits include pottery, stone tools, shell artifacts, and other objects excavated from the shell mound. These displays provide an introduction to the everyday life of people who lived in the area thousands of years ago.
A reconstructed “Ancient House” is also available, allowing visitors to get a sense of what homes and daily life may have looked like during prehistoric times.
The park’s restaurant offers a selection of popular dishes for children and families, with takeout options also available. Visitors can enjoy their food in the restaurant or take it outside to the grassy areas.
A dedicated barbecue area allows families and groups to enjoy an outdoor meal surrounded by nature.
Barbecue use requires a reservation. Visitors cannot bring their own charcoal or firewood, but fuel can be purchased at the park. Guests can bring their own ingredients and cooking equipment and enjoy an outdoor cooking experience together.
The park is approximately a 20-minute walk from Amaariki Station on the Kominato Railway Line.
Alternatively, visitors can take a Kominato Bus from JR Higashi-Kaizuka Station or Goi Station to the Yamakura Kodomo no Kuni bus stop. The terminal stop is located directly in front of the park’s main entrance, making this a convenient option for families.
By car, the park is approximately 15 minutes from the Ichihara Interchange on the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line and Tateyama Expressway.
Parking is available at the park for a fee, making it convenient for families carrying picnic supplies, barbecue equipment, or children’s belongings.
Chiba Kodomo no Kuni Kidsdom combines nature, recreation, learning, and entertainment in one family-friendly destination. Children can enjoy exciting attractions such as go-karts and athletic playgrounds, while younger visitors can have fun in indoor play areas and seasonal water facilities.
The presence of the Yamakura Shell Mound and reconstructed ancient house also adds an educational element, allowing visitors to learn about prehistoric life while enjoying a day at the park.
With its lakefront setting, spacious green areas, diverse attractions, and seasonal events, Chiba Kodomo no Kuni Kidsdom is a place where families can relax, play, and create memorable experiences together. It is a particularly appealing destination for travelers visiting Ichihara with children.
