Yubari Melon is one of Japan’s best-known luxury melons. It was first developed in 1961 in Yubari, a city that was once one of Hokkaido’s major coal-mining centers.
Yubari originally prospered as a coal-mining town. After Japan’s energy revolution during the 1950s and 1960s, the decline of the coal industry created an urgent need for new sources of income. The city experimented with various agricultural and commercial products in search of a specialty that could support the local economy.
Among the many possibilities considered, melons ultimately emerged as the most promising crop. Yubari’s natural environment proved particularly well suited to melon cultivation, with large differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures and volcanic-ash soil that provides excellent drainage.
In 1961, a red-fleshed netted melon known as the “Yubari King” was developed. It combined the distinctive aroma and rich sweetness expected from a premium melon with the growing conditions of Yubari.
The melon gradually gained recognition throughout Japan and eventually became one of the country’s most famous fruit brands. Today, Yubari Melon is widely regarded as a luxury food and a symbol of Hokkaido’s high-quality agricultural produce.
The finest Yubari Melons are carefully graded, and exceptional examples can command extraordinarily high prices at auctions. The very best melons have reportedly sold for as much as ¥300,000 per fruit, highlighting the prestige attached to this famous Hokkaido brand.
For visitors to Hokkaido, tasting Yubari Melon in its home region is a chance to experience not only a prized fruit but also a remarkable part of Yubari’s history—from its days as a coal-mining town to its transformation into a nationally recognized agricultural brand.
