The Nikka Whisky Hokkaido Yoichi Distillery stands in Yoichi, a town on the coast of Hokkaido known for its cool, humid climate, abundant water, and exceptionally clear air. These natural conditions are remarkably well suited to whisky production.

In 2002, the Yoichi Distillery became the first malt whisky distillery in Japan to receive certification from The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS).
