Nango Onsen Shakunage-no-Yu

A Natural Hot Spring Surrounded by Mountain Scenery

Nango Onsen Shakunage-no-Yu is a day-use hot spring facility located in the peaceful mountain countryside of Tone, Numata, Gunma Prefecture. Surrounded by lush nature and the clear waters of the Neri River, it offers visitors a relaxing opportunity to enjoy a traditional Japanese hot spring experience.

The facility is known for its 100% natural hot spring water flowing directly from the source. With fresh mountain air, quiet scenery, and the soothing warmth of the baths, Shakunage-no-Yu is a popular destination for both local residents and visitors from outside the region.

Abundant Natural Hot Spring Water Flowing Directly from the Source

The greatest attraction of Shakunage-no-Yu is its abundant alkaline simple hot spring, supplied entirely by natural spring water from the site.

The water has a pH of 9.4 and flows from the source at approximately 400 liters per minute. Even though the facility is publicly operated, it uses fresh spring water without recirculating it, allowing guests to enjoy the distinctive qualities of natural hot spring water.

The strongly alkaline water has a smooth, gentle feel on the skin and is often described as a “beauty-enhancing hot spring.” After bathing, many visitors appreciate the soft and refreshed feeling of their skin.

Because fresh water continuously flows into the baths, guests can enjoy a clean and refreshing bathing environment while experiencing the natural character of the spring.

A Warm, Wooden Building Blended into the Natural Landscape

The facility makes extensive use of locally sourced cedar and hinoki cypress, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere throughout the building.

The single-story structure blends naturally with the surrounding mountain village landscape. The scent and texture of the wood add to the peaceful atmosphere, creating a place where visitors can slow down and forget the stresses of everyday life.

A Variety of Baths to Enjoy

The bathing area is divided into Japanese-style and Western-style sections, with the men’s and women’s areas changing places on a weekly basis. Each area includes indoor and open-air baths, allowing visitors to enjoy different bathing environments.

Hinoki Cypress Bath

The Hinoki Bath is made using cypress timber harvested from the local mountain forests. The natural fragrance of hinoki fills the bathing area, creating a soothing atmosphere as you relax in the warm water.

The combination of warm water and the gentle aroma of natural wood provides a particularly relaxing experience.

Stone Bath

The Stone Bath is constructed from rounded stones and designed to evoke the scenery of Fukiware Falls, one of Gunma’s famous natural landmarks.

The rugged yet beautiful arrangement of stones conveys the power of nature and creates an attractive setting in which to enjoy the hot spring.

Open-Air Bath

The open-air baths provide views of the surrounding mountains and natural landscape. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons, from fresh green foliage to brilliant autumn colors.

In winter, guests can soak in the warm water while looking out over a quiet snow-covered landscape. The combination of the clear mountain air, snow, and hot spring steam creates a deeply relaxing experience surrounded by nature.

Private Family Bath

A private family bath is also available for families with young children and visitors who prefer a more private bathing experience.

Being able to enjoy the hot spring without worrying about other bathers makes this option particularly convenient for families and small groups.

Hot Spring Qualities and Traditional Benefits

The water at Shakunage-no-Yu is classified as an alkaline simple hot spring with low osmotic pressure and a high temperature. Its smooth texture has earned it a reputation as a hot spring that leaves the skin feeling soft and refreshed.

Traditional bathing indications include nerve pain, muscle pain, joint pain, stiff shoulders, movement disorders, joint stiffness, bruises and sprains, chronic digestive conditions, hemorrhoids, sensitivity to cold, recovery after illness, fatigue, and general health maintenance.

Whether visiting after a day of sightseeing or simply looking for a peaceful place to relax, the hot spring provides an opportunity to refresh both body and mind.

Dining, Relaxation, and Local Shopping

Shakunage-no-Yu offers a range of facilities beyond the baths. After bathing, visitors can relax in the Yuatari Salon or the spacious large relaxation hall, which can also accommodate groups.

The facility’s activity and training room is sometimes used for events and programs that introduce visitors to the culture and traditions of the local community.

At the restaurant Tsutsujitei, guests can enjoy dishes prepared with fresh local ingredients. Regional specialties and seasonal dishes provide an opportunity to discover the flavors of Gunma alongside the hot spring experience.

There is also a farmers’ market called Nango Market, selling locally grown vegetables, regional specialties, processed foods, and other products. It is popular with both local residents and tourists and is a convenient place to find souvenirs while experiencing the agricultural character of the area.

Nango no Magariya — A Historic Traditional House

Next to Shakunage-no-Yu stands Nango no Magariya, the former Suzuki Family Residence, which has been designated an Important Cultural Property by Numata City.

Thought to have been built around 1785, the traditional thatched-roof house is an example of the distinctive magariya style, a type of farmhouse particularly associated with northeastern Japan.

The Suzuki family served for generations as village headmen and, during the Edo period, the residence was also used to accommodate officials dispatched by feudal lords.

Inside, visitors can see traditional features such as the irori sunken hearth, family living spaces, and an upper room for receiving important guests, providing a glimpse into everyday life in rural Japan during earlier centuries.

The grounds also include a storehouse, a waterwheel hut, and a foot bath. Visitors can further experience traditional rural culture through activities such as soba noodle making, oyaki dumpling making, and konjac making.

Convenient for Exploring Nearby Attractions

Shakunage-no-Yu is conveniently located for sightseeing in the surrounding area. It is approximately 15 minutes by car from Fukiware Falls, one of Gunma’s most famous scenic attractions, and about 5 minutes from Sonohara Lake.

Its location also makes it a convenient stop when driving along the northern route around Mount Akagi. Many visitors combine a visit to the hot spring with sightseeing and scenic driving in the Numata area.

A Peaceful Retreat Where Nature and Hot Springs Meet

Nango Onsen Shakunage-no-Yu brings together abundant natural hot spring water, beautiful mountain scenery, local cuisine, regional products, and traditional culture.

Soaking in the source-fed hot spring while looking out over the changing scenery of the mountain village is a wonderful way to escape the pace of everyday life.

When exploring Numata and northern Gunma, consider stopping at Shakunage-no-Yu to experience the refreshing combination of pure natural hot spring water and the peaceful beauty of the surrounding countryside.
