Karatani Falls is a powerful waterfall where water plunges dramatically into a spacious rocky basin with a thunderous roar. On a lucky day, visitors may even see a rainbow forming near the base of the falls. Nearby Akagane-toyo Falls is known for the mysterious emerald-green color of its plunge pool.
The surrounding rock walls are formed from lava displaying distinctive columnar jointing, a geological feature created as volcanic rock cools and contracts. The waterfall takes its name from its location near the confluence with a stream known as Karatani. It measures approximately 15 meters in height and 5 meters in width.
Located at the foot of Mount Ontake, which rises to 3,067 meters, the Hida-Osaka area is known for its abundant rainfall, steep mountain streams, and extensive forests. The region contains more than 200 waterfalls with drops of at least five meters, making it one of Japan’s most remarkable destinations for waterfall enthusiasts.
Following a forest road farther upstream along the valley, visitors can reach both Karatani Falls and Akagane-toyo Falls after approximately one hour of walking. The journey offers an opportunity to appreciate the area’s pristine streams, lush woodland, and dramatic mountain scenery.
Gan-date Gorge is a scenic valley shaped by the abundant water flowing from Mount Ontake. Around 60,000 years ago, a volcanic eruption from the mountain produced a vast lava flow. Its exposed end, known as Gan-date, remains one of the area’s most striking geological features.
The region’s steep terrain, extensive forests, and plentiful water have created ideal conditions for the formation of more than 200 distinctive waterfalls. Together, these natural features form a spectacular landscape where volcanic geology and flowing water can be enjoyed side by side.
Karatani Falls is an appealing destination for travelers who enjoy dramatic waterfalls, forest walks, and distinctive geological scenery. Combined with nearby Akagane-toyo Falls and the rugged beauty of Gan-date Gorge, it offers a memorable way to experience the natural wonders of Gifu Prefecture.
