Ina City

A Mountain City Surrounded by the Central and Southern Alps

Ina City lies in the northern part of the Ina Valley in southern Nagano Prefecture. Surrounded by magnificent mountains and shaped by a long history, it is one of the representative cities of the southern Shinshu region.

The Akaishi Mountains, or Southern Alps, rise to the east, while the majestic Kiso Mountains, or Central Alps, extend to the west. Between them, the clear waters of the Tenryu River flow through the valley. Thanks to its strategic location, Ina has flourished as an important transportation hub since ancient times and today offers an appealing combination of nature, history, culture, and local cuisine.

A Landscape Shaped by Mountains and Rivers

Ina City can truly be described as a city of mountains and rivers. To the east stands Mount Shiomi, 3,052 meters, one of the principal peaks of the Southern Alps. To the west, mountains including Mount Shogigashira and Mount Nyukasa rise across the landscape.

The surrounding mountains take on a different character with every season. Fresh greenery arrives in spring, cool mountain air makes summer especially pleasant, autumn brings brilliant foliage, and winter transforms the landscape into a world of snow.

The Tenryu River runs through the center of the city and has long been closely connected with the lives of local people. The JR East Central Japan Iida Line and National Route 153 run along the river, forming important transportation routes between Shinshu and Mikawa. They continue to support the region’s economy and tourism today.

Mountains for Hiking and Nature Exploration

Ina is surrounded by mountains that offer opportunities for hiking, climbing, and observing alpine nature. Mount Nyukasa is relatively accessible even for beginners, and its summit provides panoramic views of both the Southern Alps and Central Alps.

For experienced mountaineers, peaks such as Mount Senjo and Mount Nokogiri offer more demanding mountain experiences. Other local favorites include Mount Mitsumine and Mount Togura, also known as Ina Fuji.

Wildflowers and alpine plants can be observed in different seasons, while the changing scenery of the mountains provides visitors with a peaceful connection to nature.

Historic Sites and Cultural Heritage

Takato Castle Ruins Park

One of Ina’s most famous historic attractions is Takato Castle Ruins Park, which is also renowned as one of Japan’s great cherry blossom viewing destinations.

In spring, the park is filled with Takato Kohigan-zakura, a distinctive variety of small-flowered cherry tree celebrated as the “Best Cherry Blossoms in Japan.” The park is also designated as a National Historic Site.

Kasuga Castle Ruins and Atsuta Shrine

Other sites preserve the history of the Warring States period and later eras. Kasuga Castle Ruins, now part of Kasuga Park, offer a glimpse into the region’s medieval past.

Atsuta Shrine is another important historical site, and its main sanctuary is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

Shintokukan

Shintokukan was the domain school of the Takato Domain. The historic building provides an opportunity to learn about education and scholarship during the Edo period and to imagine the intellectual atmosphere of the former domain.

Historic Temples

Several historic temples can also be found throughout Ina, including Chusenji, Sanshuji, and Rengeji. Their traditional architecture and quiet temple grounds provide peaceful places to explore the area’s religious heritage.

Rengeji is particularly interesting to visitors fascinated by Japanese history because it contains the grave of Eshima, a woman who once served in the shogun’s inner palace, or Ooku.

At Karei Plateau, visitors can also enjoy spectacular views of the night sky, far from the bright lights of major cities.

Festivals and Local Culture

Ina hosts festivals and cultural events throughout the year, offering visitors a chance to experience the energy of the local community.

The annual calendar begins with the Habiro Lion Dance in January and continues with events such as the spring High School Ina Ekiden road relay and cherry blossom festivals. Summer brings the lively Ina Festival, one of the city’s major celebrations.

A highlight of the Ina Festival is the “Dragon Dance”, with music and lyrics created by Ryudo Uzaki. Local residents join together to form large dancing circles, creating an energetic celebration that is difficult to experience anywhere else.

Autumn brings events such as the Southern Alps Furusato Festival and the Gyoja Soba Festival, which celebrate local traditions and food culture. These festivals offer travelers an opportunity to experience the warmth, hospitality, and vitality of the local community.

Ina’s Distinctive Local Cuisine

Horse Meat Dishes

Local cuisine also includes horse sashimi and otaguri, a traditional dish made by simmering horse offal. These foods reflect the distinctive culinary traditions of the southern Shinshu region.

Takato Soba and Gyoja Soba

Soba has a particularly strong tradition in Ina. Takato soba is traditionally served with a spicy daikon radish dipping sauce, creating a sharp and refreshing flavor that is especially characteristic of the region.

Gyoja soba is another local specialty appreciated for its fragrant buckwheat flavor. Sampling these traditional soba dishes is an excellent way to experience Ina’s food culture.

Other Local Specialties

Other well-known foods include sauce katsudon, Takato manju, and milk bread. Ina is also known for its traditional insect-eating culture, including inago tsukudani made from grasshoppers, zazamushi, and hachinoko, or bee larvae.

These foods were traditionally valued as important sources of protein and remain distinctive examples of the region’s culinary heritage.

Local Sake and the Waters of Ina

Ina is also home to several local sake producers. Brands such as Shinano Nishiki, Inokashira, and Daikoku benefit from the region’s clean water and favorable climate.

For visitors interested in Japanese sake, tasting local brews provides another way to discover the character of the Ina Valley and the natural environment that supports its food culture.

A City Where Nature and Culture Meet

Ina City brings together the Southern Alps, Central Alps, the Tenryu River, historic sites, traditional festivals, and distinctive local cuisine. Its scenery changes dramatically with the seasons, while its cultural traditions continue to be maintained by local communities.
